Browse Forums Lighting + Lighting Design 1 May 02, 2015 7:25 pm Went to another lighting store today to get quotes for house lot. Gentleman there was very helpful and more than happy to spend considerable time with us going through specifics of every light. We mentioned wall lights for the entry hall and he suggested to instead use step lights down low. The idea actually sounded great as the light would bounce off our porcelain tiles creating enough light for the eyes to follow when entering our home. I liked the idea so much, I purchased 2 of the lights he recommended and a transformer to bring home and test. These were also one of the only lights he did not have set up to see running and to be fair, I didn't ask. As you can see from the images and video below they are just way way way too bright. In fact, I think these particular lights would even be too bright going up the stairs as they would be at eye height to some degree. I still like the concept, so will look for a alternative light that performs the task better. Re: This Is Why You Should Be Careful Selecting Lights 2May 02, 2015 8:01 pm Interestingly, in the pictrues it's hard to tell whether the light is bright, or just that everything else is dark. Photos really only show the distribution of light, rather than the total light levels. It does demonstrate that you need the right balance of light between the high level lights and the low level ones. Your experience certainly shows the value of trying things out first, and thanks for sharing the idea. Re: This Is Why You Should Be Careful Selecting Lights 3May 02, 2015 8:14 pm You are correct John, It IS pitch black except for those lights. But that is what I wanted to test. My vision was to have a more subtle light. Considering these are sold as "Step Lights" you also need to appreciate that if used on steps, they would be alot higher. Like.. in your face height as you climb the stairs, so they would still be far too bright for that application also (IMHO). Re: This Is Why You Should Be Careful Selecting Lights 4May 02, 2015 8:37 pm You should probably look at something with a good glare cut off like this type of thing. Basically something that shines light down onto the floor rather than just shining straight out. http://www.domuslighting.com.au/catalog ... -white-led Re: This Is Why You Should Be Careful Selecting Lights 5May 02, 2015 8:39 pm To test you will need to buy some plywood and cut holes and fit them and then test again. this will stop the light coming off the wall. Step up light are also more of a guide to shiw where steps are and are not meant to light an area of a house. When i got no time to sit at the computer. I use tapatalk. Wont have time to retest until next weekend but I'll get it ready and post the results Yeah I didn't want them to light the whole room.. but these little lights seem to be trying to do just that lol Cheers, Paul (& Lisa) Parkhill 36 by ClarendonHomes in Coomera Retreat H1 Build Thread And Blog Building Blogs List - Go Ahead And Add Yours!! Would still like to get a bit of light out onto the floor out in front. A landing strip of sorts lol. Something to light the floor enough to draw a person into the living area that would be lit up properly. Re: This Is Why You Should Be Careful Selecting Lights 8May 03, 2015 7:30 am They're not very directional, they just don't shine directly outwards. I haven't used those particular ones but I regularly use these http://www.versalux.com.au/portfolio/dex-08/ for school dormitories, hospitals and aged care facilities for corridor night lighting. The Domus fitting is quite a bit cheaper but more a domestic grade quality. Re: This Is Why You Should Be Careful Selecting Lights 10May 03, 2015 6:07 pm The Trixie (round or square) is about $250ea I think. But they are proper commercial grade exterior grade fittings. The domus one is probably under $100. I think they also have other styles that do a similar thing (tiny recessed wall lights that shine light down onto stairs/floor) Building Services Engineer Renovating our 1960's modernist home in Brisbane https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=53&t=82091 Hi All, I just wanted to close this topic out with an update.
