Browse Forums Lighting + Lighting Design 1 Oct 28, 2014 6:15 am Hi For energy efficiency and comfort I would like fans in the bedrooms of our new home. I don't like running air con all the time, especially in a nursery (we are having ducted). My husband doesn't like the look of them, though. Has anyone installed the "fan away", how does it look? Is it actually a decent fan and how noisy is it. From pictures the Aeretron looks great and on choice.com.au it's well revised. No light there though. - I know down lights are tricky in bedrooms but is there any combo of down lights and fan that would work without a strobe affect - any recs for attractive fans or fanlights - I don't think I could convince hubby to go with wall sconces. Beds are 4 x 4, 3.5 x 4, 3.6 x 4.2, 3.98 x 3.98 (nursery/playroom/spare). Thanks! Re: Fan lights and bedroom solutions 2Oct 28, 2014 6:55 am We have fans - and high ceilings - in bedrooms, lounge and family. Not in dining - Mrs SM likes candles and they go funny under a fan. Like most things - you don't really notice them after a while. Our Bedroom ones also come with the light attachment. Very good - instead of aircon - so long as its not to hot - and excellent overnight. Re: Fan lights and bedroom solutions 3Oct 28, 2014 9:02 am THanks yes its a good point about not noticing them after awhile. I definitely want to get them it is just deciding how to go about it. Do you have fans with lights or another solution? Thanks Re: Fan lights and bedroom solutions 4Oct 28, 2014 10:52 pm We're having a fan in our master. The lighting solution is to have downlights around the edge of the room where the fan can't reach them, and pendant lights over the bedsides as task lighting for reading in bed. Lamps could also provide good lighting if you get the right ones. Re: Fan lights and bedroom solutions 5Oct 29, 2014 4:06 am This is what we did in our second and current build:- Beds 1, 2, 3 – Fans with lights, bedside lamps, remotes (basic with no LCD screen as they chew the batteries.) Bed 4/Hubby’s gym, Study – Fans with lights. No downlights in house and no ducted air. Large split system for kitchen/dining/family (double doors to front hallway and CSD to rear hallway so area can be closed off.) Small split for TV room. Totally happy with result. Fans are Futura from Beacon. Regards, Grumbles Re: Fan lights and bedroom solutions 6Oct 29, 2014 4:55 am trixee We're having a fan in our master. I'm concerned about down lights being too harsh for a bedroom but I guess that is why you also have ambient light from pendants/bedsides. But I guess we only have four bedrooms and it would mean won't need down lights possibly.. Expensive though . http://www.beaconlighting.com.au/fans/c ... maple.html (comes in a range of colours including white just don't think I can bring myself to spend that much). The futura looks reasonable, unobtrusive. What bulbs does it take Re: Fan lights and bedroom solutions 8Oct 29, 2014 6:14 am Three of the fans use R7S bulbs and the other two use T5 22W. Most fans are unattractive but when you do come across one that looks "nice" it unfortunately has a whopping price tag attached. Regards, Grumbles Re: Fan lights and bedroom solutions 9Oct 29, 2014 7:59 am Thanks, yes that is exactly what I am finding! I don't know a lot about this, it's my first home and a custom build. I want to make sure the light bulbs available are standard so I have an option for warm rather than cool light. I thought another option is the Aeretron with carefully placed downlights. We do have AC for the very hot days and still nights that we get in summer but we use the fans most of the time with the house opened up to catch any breeze that's available. Lighting is all down lights with each room listed below having 4 lights in each. Bedroom, study, etc. room sizes are between 4.8m x 3.8m to 3.8m x 3.6m The down lights are all about 1.5m to 1.8m from the fan towards each corner (on the room diagonals) and we don't get any strobing. A couple of things to note are: 1) we could have gotten away with only 2 lights in the the smaller bedrooms (apparently) but went with the 4 because of the fans - we do have dimmers on all the rooms to control how bright the rooms are. 2) those dimensions work in our place as they suit our ceiling height, the blade size of the fans, the distance the fan hangs from the ceiling and the beam spread angle of the down lights. ----------------------------------------------- http://pab34newdigs.blogspot.com.au/ ----------------------------------------------- Re: Fan lights and bedroom solutions 11Oct 29, 2014 11:48 am Leksie5000 trixee We're having a fan in our master. I'm concerned about down lights being too harsh for a bedroom but I guess that is why you also have ambient light from pendants/bedsides. We're actually only having 2 down lights in the bulkhead at the foot of the bed, one over the full length mirror for dressing. May not be enough but we don't want too much lighting in the bedroom. There should be enough ambient lighting from the pendants (I hope!). Re: Fan lights and bedroom solutions 12Oct 31, 2014 2:38 pm Thanks, yeah I am hopinh 2 x would be enough, I don't want it too bright either. Any lighting experts have tips? Aleks Re: Fan lights and bedroom solutions 13Nov 02, 2014 4:30 pm We have 3 Fanaways . In 2 bedrooms and the lounge room. Ours are the older model as we got them on special. 1. They do throw a lot of light. We have no other lighting in these areas except table lamps. 2. Ours are all white with the clear plastic blades. You hardly notice the blades when fan is working and of course no strobing because of the design. 3. They are very quiet. My husband turned one on the other day and I only realized it was on when I saw the vertical blinds moving. 4. We have only used ours on low or medium as this is enough to get rid of that horrible still heat. 5. The only hiccup we've had is one of them sometimes gets the slight wobbles. We've found if we turn it to high it stabilizes. Then we lower the speed and no more wobble. I have taken a photo of the one in lounge room. Didn't take any of the bedrooms because they are messy and I don't do housework Sundays Now I notice the one in the photo still has a red sticker!! Of well, tomorrow is another day. I have bi-fold doors in my new house which I'm building. Would you please advice which company did the fly screen installation for the bi-fold doors? Does that fly screens installation has to be completed while the bi-fold doors are fitted or can be done after handover of the house? Thanks in advance. Re: Fan lights and bedroom solutions 15Nov 19, 2014 12:38 pm Hi Ace & thanks. It all comes down to what brand of bi-fold you're installing (e.g. Stegbar, Vantage, etc) and what screen system works best with each window manufacturer. We found to rolled up screens to be too bulky to try and build in (needed more than 90mm) so went with the concertina ones from Stegbar (manufactured by http://brio.com.au/screensolutions.html) with a recess built into each wall at either end to accommodate them without fouling the doors. It took a bit of time working with my builder to sort out what finished floor height we had and how that worked in with the bottom track of the bi-fold and the screen system, how the screens 'folded up' at each end so they didn't foul the door handle of the bi-fold, etc. Another thread here about it: http://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=9817&p=1111705#p1111705 I believe they can be put on after the build but getting it sorted/built in during construction will give the best result. Good luck with it! ----------------------------------------------- http://pab34newdigs.blogspot.com.au/ ----------------------------------------------- Re: Fan lights and bedroom solutions 16Nov 19, 2014 1:51 pm ace14 @PAB_34, You have very beautiful house. Retractable and pleated screens are ideal for screening bifold doors. If you are are still in the building phase it would be good to know more about the finish of your doors so that you can decide whether the screens should be installed with the doors or whether you have get them retrofitted. General rule of thumb: If your doors are going to be recessed into the floor then talk to your builder about the screens now so they can work with the fly screen installer. The last thing you want is to have to cut into your flooring. If no rebating is required then the screens can be retrofitted at a later stage.
