Browse Forums Lighting + Lighting Design 1 May 31, 2008 8:25 pm Hi team
We're having ceiling fans in every room, and just exploring what options we have for lighting. So far we have come up with: 1. Fans with lights already attached - can anyone recommend a good model? My parents have some of these but reckon the lights are not very good. 2. Downlights dotted around the fans - nice but we think could get expensive with (say) 4 in every room. Any other ideas or opinions on the above? thanks in advance Re: Lighting options when you have ceiling fans in every room?? 2May 31, 2008 8:50 pm Some fan lights look good and others well IMO look bloody awful.
These fans look good IMO and I have one in our bedroom and the study because the rooms are basically opposite each other so I wanted some synergy in the looks department. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ They use a Halogen lamp and put out a pretty good light. Another thing with fans if they're going in bedrooms is you want them to be quiet when operating; I hate noisy and un-balanced fans. Lighting is another thing, downlights are good, although if you like to read in bed be mindful of where you put the lights, otherwise when you lay on your back to read you might have a light firing straight in your eyes. One of the problems with ceiling fans is any light passing through the blades can have a strobing effect, so you’re better locating the lights outside of the blades perimeter and balance up the light on either side of the fan. Wether you have 2, 4, or 6 lights in your bedroom any that reside by the fan make sure you light up equally on either side to minimise any strobing effect. Fan Lighting 3May 31, 2008 11:43 pm Hi there Donuts,
I'm thinking the best option would be to install fans with built in lights. Most of them will come with either a 70 - 100w globe which is heaps. In regards to downlights, depending on the room 4 may be too much and a bit of overkill!. Hope this helps. Re: Lighting options when you have ceiling fans in every room?? 4Jun 01, 2008 10:46 am Ceiling fans are great for reducing your energy consumption on hot days, but then they have halogen lamps which are very ineffecient. I agree some of them can look pretty average, but I like your fans - can you please let me know where you got them, and how expensive they were, if you remember? Thanks
Good point also about downlights shining straight into your face when you're reading - for that reason I am thinking well go with a fan light in the bedrooms! Casa2 Ceiling fans are great for reducing your energy consumption on hot days, but then they have halogen lamps which are very ineffecient. Do the nice looking ones also come with CFL lights? So true Casa! And it's frustrating that having fans limits your creativity with what lights you can put in each room. Maybe MICA or Ewan can answer your question? Also, do CFL lights put out good light? Re: Lighting options when you have ceiling fans in every room?? 6Jun 01, 2008 12:01 pm donuts just make sure you check what the maximum light wattage is for the fan light. we had fan lights in the bedroom and lounge of our previous house and i felt the light wasn't bright enough for reading/ looking at things in detail. Always had to put on a reading lamp as well. I found it really annoying. However if we end up getting ceiling fans we will be having fan lights again. Re: Lighting options when you have ceiling fans in every room?? 7Jun 01, 2008 12:10 pm I think CFL lights are OK, but generally go for 100W equivalent per 4 x4 m room, when replacing the 75W incandescent. I hope that makes sense. Basically go for more Watts than you otherwise would have.
Also, keep in mind that CFL give off less light when it's cold. This shows up when you first turn them on and also depends on how warm the room is. If you use them outside on a cold winters night the light output can be appreciably lower. They're not cheap over $200.00 ea, Beacon Lighting, and I see Mica also sells them. On the positive side they're quiet, well balanced and use a halogen lamp so reasonable light. Another thing you should look at is remote controls for the fans, saves having to get out of bed to turn the fans on or off, otherwise get the controller installed beside the bed. The noise bit is generally a bit hard to judge in a noisy shop but most good quality fans will come with a balancing kit, it allows you to place a small supplied weight on the top side of the fan to balance the blade. The fan instructions guide you through the process.....bit like a wheel balancing on a car. mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: Lighting options when you have ceiling fans in every room?? 10Jun 01, 2008 2:07 pm At Beacon lighting they said that the wooden blade fans are quieter than the s/steel fans. Re: Lighting options when you have ceiling fans in every room?? 11Jun 01, 2008 4:52 pm re fans - Any good lighting store will have them donuts - go have a look - you gte what you pay for. The word from a sparky I know - keep away from the arlec brand - prone to issues apparently.
What bulb - any decent light in a fan should be able to take a CFL bulb - except iff it has a dimming function. the remote controls are good idea - (I can't remember how many times I've hopped out of bed at 3am to turn the fan down becasue I was now too cold with it on high) The remotes are also good if retro fitting you house as you can utilise the existing lights' wiring. As for reading from a ceiling light - doesn't anyone have reading lights beside their bed these days? Steve Re: Lighting options when you have ceiling fans in every room?? 12Jun 02, 2008 4:02 pm Yak_Chat As for reading from a ceiling light - doesn't anyone have reading lights beside their bed these days? Steve I plan to have reading lights by the bed too. But say someone else is using the room and wants the main lights on, if there happens to be a downlight right above your bed, if you're ****** on bed reading it might be shining right in your eye. This has happened to me in some hotel rooms I've stayed in and can get annoying! Re: Lighting options when you have ceiling fans in every room?? 14Jun 02, 2008 8:24 pm [quote=
As for reading from a ceiling light - doesn't anyone have reading lights beside their bed these days? Steve[/quote] Well I used "reading" as an example but there are other reasons for wanting decent lighting that a reading lamp won't work for. Do you put ceiling fans with lights in them, (not keen on downlights in bedrooms, master ok, but not the rest) or wall mounted lights, never lived in house with wall mounted lights, so was hoping for some feedback, good/bad, outdated, are the practical or just for looks??
Heres a pic of the sort of wall mounted lights i am referring to cheers stewy Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Lighting options when you have ceiling fans in every room?? 17Jun 23, 2008 11:17 pm Walls lights are a good option in bedrooms with Ceiling fans
The other is to just locate some outlets near the corners that are switched by the light switch. That way you can change the floor standing lights as you choose. Something like this. Same as you I found that the only nice ones took halogen lights. Still going to look into the ones kyton mentioened though.
who does the hunter pacific ones, and how did you come across them? thanks simone Re: Lighting options when you have ceiling fans in every room?? 20Jun 24, 2008 1:52 pm donuts - the Hunter Pacific fans are available at Beacon Lighting - models are the Concept and Concept II.
I found out about the future CFL option was by emailing them directly through their website. http://www.hunterpacific.com.au These are more expensive fans - $200-300 each - but have a 5 yr warranty. The contact couldn't tell me the specific release date of the CFL-light fans but said it would be in the next 12 months. After 4 years - we're in! 4 6816 Hello!
