Browse Forums Lighting + Lighting Design 1 Feb 12, 2014 11:40 am Hi, I'm hoping someone more creative than myself can suggest a lighting solution for our kitchen/dining area. We currently have 2 lights similar to the picture, just older and ugly. The ceiling is 2.4m throughout. I'm not a big fan of the oyster lights (none I've seen anyway) and don't think down lights would be suitable. Re: Lighting Ideas for low ceilings 2Feb 12, 2014 11:57 am Doing a search of batten fix lighting will give you some ideas that do not drop too far from the ceiling. We have something similar to the picture you posted in our kitchen but the spread of light isn't great. Just as a starting point here is a link, I'm sure all lighting places would have a range of something: http://www.beaconlighting.com.au/lighti ... n-fix.html Also consider that although the ceiling is only 2.4 some pendant lights over dining tables, kitchen island benchs etc can still work especially if they are relatively light coloured and open. http://camdenbuild.blogspot.com.au/ by invite only please pm me Re: Lighting Ideas for low ceilings 3Feb 16, 2014 8:48 pm Have you considered uplights recessed into the walls? If you choose wall and ceiling colours that are the same, with ceiling being weaker strength and have no cornices, the wall/ceiling junction disappears. Re: Lighting Ideas for low ceilings 4Feb 16, 2014 11:41 pm Hi, May I ask why you dont want to use Downlights? I'm not really sure why to be honest. I'm not sure if they would suit the space... although may be they would. We also want to put the same light down the hall so it would all match. Are downlights costly to install? Re: Lighting Ideas for low ceilings 6Mar 01, 2014 1:58 pm Downlights are costly to install (I've heard quoted of $120 per light, supply and install, for halogens), costly to run due to the number you need to light a space, and breaks through your insulation. The fittings themselves are cheap. Re: Lighting Ideas for low ceilings 7Mar 16, 2014 4:10 pm Hi, Downlights are not expensive to install at all compared to several years ago. Electricians generally charge an hourly rate now, but generally will quote about $40-$50 each The quality of downlights has grown so much in the last 2 years, and we can safely say that you wont need to fill your roof with lights to light up a room. There are a couple of models out there that will light up a bedroom with only 2 fittings. I hope this helps Kind Regards, Kristin Lighting Expert Phone -1300 798 220 Email - service@golights.com.au Website - http://www.golights.com.au Re: Lighting Ideas for low ceilings 8Mar 25, 2014 5:49 pm GoLights Hi, Downlights are not expensive to install at all compared to several years ago. In this space I would use 3x rows of 5 lights. You would need a high lumen output downlight such as the Protech or Deco producing up to 900 lumens in Cool White. they also have a warm white available. Please don't hesitate to let us know if you have any more questions. Re: Lighting Ideas for low ceilings 11Mar 26, 2014 2:03 pm Cameron32 We are planning to install only 6 downlight fittings in addtion to 3 pendant lights, is it enough go with deco 13W of your specification? ^ Deco Downlights should be enough, if you are running pendants in the same room. Its a powerful downlight and very reliable, so it will do the job, and in the worst case scenario, if you feel its not enough, you can add a couple more later.
