Browse Forums Lighting + Lighting Design Re: multi globe ceiling lights 2Jan 03, 2014 7:23 pm What exactly have you got there now? In the extended family we've had problems like that for a variety of reasons. Just to give a few examples. One appeared to be due to a bad batch of light bulbs, they were an uncommon shape and size, for a while they were being replaced weekly, the fitting was checked and found to be alright, then one day the problem stopped, I suppose by then the stores had restocked their shelves with a different batch. Another room had a less frequent but still too regular problem which stopped after the ceiling bayonet was replaced. In another room the problem was solved when the brand of light bulb was changed cos it was an easy type to get in many brands. It will be interesting to see if having a single bulb like what your suggesting might make a difference. Oh, I just had a thought, do you have a dimmer switch? Re: multi globe ceiling lights 3Jan 05, 2014 4:51 pm Hi Jazzy Jess. Thanks heaps for taking the time to reply in such detail. Yes, we've been through globes of all types and qualities. It's three fittings in total, two with three globes and one with two. They all blow pretty much weekly. There is no dimmer anywhere. Without knowing anything about wattage and current etc, our uneducated guess is that it's possible haiving two/three globes on each fitting is possibly stressing the wiring in the ceiling somehow. So we're keen to at least try to put in single-globe fittings and see how we go. We might even get a sparkie in to check it out beforehand, but we hesitate to do that, of course, as you probably know that tradies charge top-dollar just to get out of bed! Re: multi globe ceiling lights 4Jan 05, 2014 5:47 pm I know. It's good to have some idea of what it is you're looking for before calling someone out. I thought the dimmer was a good possibility as they seem to have the potential to be quite troublesome. Oh well. I'm afraid I'm out of ideas, but I hope as people return from holidays someone else might be able to suggest something. neilb Without knowing anything about wattage and current etc, our uneducated guess is that it's possible haiving two/three globes on each fitting is possibly stressing the wiring in the ceiling somehow. Oh, was there anything on the packaging about maximum wattage to use with those fittings? Oh, and when you say the fittings blow globes, do they blow all at once or just individual ones? Re: multi globe ceiling lights 5Jan 05, 2014 10:46 pm Individually. But the second/third ones can blow in just as many days. And no packaging/label about wattage, as I'm sure they were installed in the late 80s (draw your own mental picture!) Thanks heaps Jess Re: multi globe ceiling lights 6Jan 06, 2014 2:56 pm One by one rather rapidly? How frustrating for you! Total guess but maybe the fittings are just too old for them modern new-fangled low-energy lightbulbs. Sorry I haven't been of any real use. Sounds like a replacement is well justified. I don't think I would be concerned about multiple globe versus single globe fittings. Personally I like that you still have some light if a globe blows at an inopportune time. What I would check carefully, as much as you can, is the quality of the fittings you buy. Cheaper spots don't limit how far you can swivel them and the wires get tangled and overheat. (Pew, what's that smell?) Long lights that hang from multiple points are hard to install level and can slip. (Hey, was that light always quite so crooked?) Some flush mounts tend to overheat. (@#$%, I can't get the old light bulb out, I think its melted into the socket.) And if you buy a matching set for multiple rooms you can really compare the quality! (The cover works fine in this one, its easy to take on and off and holds snug in place, but that one is awkward and loose, and they're the exact same style!) Yup, experienced or personally know someone who has experienced all of those. Perhaps a thread titled something like what to look for in a reliable light fitting could be useful. I'd appreciate some hints too. We've got a couple of bare rooms now cos we gave up looking. Re: multi globe ceiling lights 8Jan 06, 2014 3:39 pm Hi, Sounds like it could also be a surging problem. I'm an electrician by trade, and work at golights.com.au and I have encountered these issues a few times with our customers, and I can say that every case is unique. Surging may be a problem, especially if the installation is quite old. I noticed that your installation was done in the 80's? It might be a good idea to have an electrician check the wiring, and for any possible surges. Another case may be a faulty batch of globes. But of course, that should be ruled out once the globes are changed, and if they blow again. You mentioned the fittings were ok? If so, please check the wiring. Without having seen your wiring, I would assume this is the first place you start. Some Lights will have a minimum wattage and a maximum wattage. Again, not having seen your lights, as long as you are meeting these requirements, it should not be an issue.
