I'm an electrician by trade, and work at golights.com.au and I have encountered these issues a few times with our customers, and I can say that every case is unique. Surging may be a problem, especially if the installation is quite old. I noticed that your installation was done in the 80's? It might be a good idea to have an electrician check the wiring, and for any possible surges. Another case may be a faulty batch of globes. But of course, that should be ruled out once the globes are changed, and if they blow again. You mentioned the fittings were ok? If so, please check the wiring. Without having seen your wiring, I would assume this is the first place you start. Some Lights will have a minimum wattage and a maximum wattage. Again, not having seen your lights, as long as you are meeting these requirements, it should not be an issue.
