Browse Forums Lighting + Lighting Design 1 Jul 24, 2013 9:31 pm Hi all, I'm new to this lighting business so was hoping for some help... This is the basic layout of our kitchen. We're planning on getting the basic batten lights throughout the house, and getting a sparky mate to install downlights after handover. My question is regarding the kitchen - will lighting over the island (probably three pendants or something along those lines) be enough to light the cooktop area too, or do we need some kind of lighting under the overhead cabinets? I've not had a kitchen that style before so not really sure how it will work... Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Thanks! - MrsT Brought first house in 2008. Renovated...a LOT. Built in 2013. That's not good for your sanity, lol. As you suggest, having lights under the overhead cabinets is a good call. You could combine them with downlights in front of the overheads since that would give you light into the cupboards too. The best option would be to have the different lights on different switches (and perhaps dimmers) so you can use the light "zones" individually. Re: Kitchen lighting, what do I need? 3Jul 24, 2013 10:58 pm We are going with the following.. 3 Pendant Lights over the Island on one base 2 D/Lights between island and oven 1 D/Light between island and ( what I am assuming will be your fridge ) We are also looking into accent lighting under the cabinetry to light up the stone benchtop where our oven will be, but depends on what the kitchen ppl quote us for those extra features. You can always stick some cheap push button LED lights as they won't be on all the time, so replacing a couple of batteries every couple of months may be a cheaper option for you. Re: Kitchen lighting, what do I need? 4Aug 05, 2013 5:32 pm Thanks guys A couple more questions... With strip lighting under overheads, is it easy enough to do after handover? Probably a stupid question but I've got no idea lol. How do they get power? And has anyone tried strip lighting from Ikea? - MrsT Brought first house in 2008. Renovated...a LOT. Built in 2013. I was surprised at how good the strip light turned out. It could of been done retrospectively quite easily. If your rangehood has a fixed rear section you could light that up as well. Ours completely slid out so we left it. Depending on Budget, you can get away with the pendants proving ample light for the kitchen and if you're worried about casting shadows over the hot plate/oven, you also have a light on the Rangehood, so that will provide ample light when cooking. If you were after a designer look, LED strip lights, or conventional under cabinet lights would look great, and suitable for display, or cooking purposes. keep in mind, if its a single story house, lights can be added at a later date with ease, so if you feel it isn't enough light once you've moved in, you can add them later. Double story homes are a bit trickier, but again, can be done if the lights are relatively close to an existing light. Please don't hesitate to ask if you have any further questions, and I hope this has helped.
