Browse Forums Lighting + Lighting Design 1 Jun 21, 2013 10:25 pm My wife and I want to replace the central ceiling pendant lights with ceiling fans in each of our 3 bedrooms. But the problem is we haven't found a ceiling fan yet with an integrated light, that we both like the look of and is the right size (the rooms aren't big - one is 4.3 x 3.3 and the other two are 3.5 x 3.3).
We do really like the Aeratron fans, but as they have no light, we would need to put in additional lighting. We'll have bedside lights but we want a main light that we can operate from the wall switch. We don't really want to put in ceiling downlights. As I see it, this leaves us with wall lighting or lights on top of our built-in wardrobes - there's about 40-50cm of space between the top of the wardrobes and the ceiling. This is our current favourite option as we could get away with not chasing cables into walls, and the lights would be hidden so appearance wouldn't matter, but we don't really know if that would work to light the whole room, and what type/how many lights to use. I'm keen to use LED to keep the energy consumption down but beyond that have no clue. Has anyone had a similar problem or got any bright ideas (no pun intended)? Thanks! Re: Lighting bedroom without ceiling lights 2Jun 22, 2013 8:32 am I thought there were heaps of ceiling fans that came with light options. Why don't you like any of them? I think a light above the built in would look quite odd IMO. Why don't you like any of them? There are indeed. Just personal taste I guess. It's not that we hate them all, we just really like the modern aerodynamic shape of the aeratron, plus it's a bit smaller than a lot of fans (small rooms), and is supposedly very quiet and cheap to run. We're just trying to work out if we can have a lighting solution that would allow us to put these fans in. Thanks for the reply Re: Lighting bedroom without ceiling lights 4Jun 22, 2013 9:35 am What about the fanaway? Building the Porter Davis Dunedin 29 maybe, thinking of forfeiting deposit and going with CH or UE Re: Lighting bedroom without ceiling lights 7Jun 22, 2013 2:36 pm offshore Yes go with some nice wall sconces. One idea to look at is the style that throws light upwards where it bounces off the ceiling. This is what I would suggest. Build thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=65085 Re: Lighting bedroom without ceiling lights 9Jun 22, 2013 3:59 pm You won't get much strobing from indirect light like this. Bad strobing occurs when you have direct downward lighting close to the fan, such as down lights. I've seen this and it's hideous. You wonder how people can live with it. Other option of course is a large pedestal fan, then any lights can be used. Re: Lighting bedroom without ceiling lights 10Jun 23, 2013 10:56 am We don't have ceiling lights in any of the bedrooms. We use fluro uplights recessed into the walls (2 per bedroom) for all but the master bedroom, which instead has 3 x Artemide Mini Surf halogen uplights, as well as a 2m LED strip recessed into a blade wall (which was used to break up the room and form the bedhead). We use the LED lights mainly, with the Surf only if we need things very bright. To save some money, we could have used some T5 fluro uplights in the blade wall (in fact that was the original plan), but the LEDs worked so well, and we ended up with 2 x 1m strips in excess which we had already paid for, we ended up using LED instead. Be aware for LED, there are different quality, and you do get what you pay for. Re: Lighting bedroom without ceiling lights 11Jul 23, 2013 12:06 am Hi Phl, Are you able to post a photo of you recessed up light (only if its not too much hassle). This sounds like the solution I have been looking for. We have several fans that come with pre-installed lights, and some with lighting kits. One that comes to mind is the Urban. It comes in White or Brushed Chrome, and there is now an LED option. These are great quality, and quiet. I have provided a link below for you to have a look at. we also have a few Hunter fans, that can be used with a light kit.
