Browse Forums Lighting + Lighting Design 1 Apr 28, 2008 11:30 pm ok this could be a really dumb question watch out!
but Ill ask it anyhow! but if you have a kitchen, tv room and dining room together and you want 1. dimmable halogens above kitchen bench top 2. dimmable cfl downlights in tv room 3. cfl downlights in dining area (not necessarily dimmable) because of the different ways of dimming cfl and how they also differ from dimmable halogens does this mean instead of having a single bank of light switches in convenient spot to all if all lights were the same you would need 3 different light switchplates controlling the 3 different things? cos they all differ at switch point does that make sense? if the cfls were the same, could only be 2? Dimming Downlights 2Apr 29, 2008 11:15 am Hi there,
Dimming CFL lights is very new technology, and not very reliable yet. I'd give it at least another 6-12 months, until its tried and tested. In addition, dimmable CFL's are still so overpriced, that it doesn't make it feasible when buying them in bulk. Halogen downlights are the way to go, especially the 12v low voltage, as they have been around for over a decade, and have a proven track record. If dimming is so important, personally I would be buying standard halogen 12v low voltage downlights. In addition, if you decided to go with both the CFL and halogen, you would have to run them off different lighting circuits. This would mean that you would need more light switches, and most probably a hefty electricians bill. In short, if dimming is preferred, stay away from the CFL's! Hope this Helps.
