Browse Forums Lighting + Lighting Design 1 May 22, 2013 11:22 am Hi, we are getting LED dimmable downlights in our new house and have read many reports (and even heard some people complain in lighting stores) that they have issues with the downlights flickering when you dim them. From what I understand it's not so much the LED downlight but more the dimmer dial that causes the problem. I wondered if anyone can give advice on which is the best dimmer dial to use with LED downlights? Thanks Mel-Lou Re: LED downlights with dimmer dial question? 2May 22, 2013 12:43 pm Hi Mel-Lou, I think it is a combination of the particular LED downlights and dimmers that is the problem. Its probably worth posting what type of LED downlights you are getting so someone can recommend a particular dimmer that works with that downlight. Our sparky installed a Lumex Loadsmart Digital Dimmer (http://scholzgroup.com.au/cms/lumex-tec ... tal-dimmer) for our Brightgreen D900s. It seems to work ok, although it doesn't dim right down to 0%. Re: LED downlights with dimmer dial question? 3May 22, 2013 1:02 pm Hi, thanks for your reply. The LED downlights we are getting are "Infinity 10W SMd LED Dimmable High Output found here for more information: http://www.lightingillusions.com.au/sho ... -downlight Thanks Mel-Lou Re: LED downlights with dimmer dial question? 5May 23, 2013 9:47 am Hi Mel-Lou, I'm not familiar with that downlight, but they do say that it is "compatible with major leading edge, trailing edge & major universal dimmers". My advice would be to ask the reseller or the manufacturer to recommend a particular dimmer that will work with these downlights. Re: LED downlights with dimmer dial question? 6May 24, 2013 1:47 pm mel-lou actually the brand is "Martec" We have them (martec) and they do flicker occasionally - or seem to. Once it was the fan that caused the effect/illusion. If they flicker you just need to adjust the dimmer switch a tad. Re: LED downlights with dimmer dial question? 7May 28, 2013 10:10 am If your lights are flickering on mainstream dimmers then its the drivers problem. If your downlight/fan company is cutting costs on drivers then there is a chance they will flicker. I am really surprised that having to adjust your dimmer to stop flicker is an acceptable solution. Re: LED downlights with dimmer dial question? 8May 28, 2013 7:41 pm There are so many quality LED down lights available right now at reasonable prices that settling for flickering lights seems bizarre. We always suggest customers do their research and even test 1 out for a while before committing to any particular model. As to why they flicker, there are several factors involved, however it almost always has something to do with the power supply (driver or transformer). The flickering problem is very common when users attempt to retrofit LED globes to existing fittings and use existing electronic transformers to run them. This is almost never a good idea. What transformer do you recommend? I'm thinking of getting the Tridonic Viper to run on the HPM 450P push button dimmers. Re: LED downlights with dimmer dial question? 10Jun 12, 2013 10:06 am I am not sure whether the 450P has been upgraded but I have not seen it run on any LED products. Re: LED downlights with dimmer dial question? 11Jan 05, 2014 4:11 pm We definitely do not recommend a transformer to run an LED especially if they are to be dimmed. We always recommend to upgrade existing transformers to Drivers (dimmable in this case) and using the correct LED globes (also must be dimmable) otherwise the flickering will constantly re-occur. We do suggest upgrading the fittings/Lights to Dimmable versions, and you should always check if the lights are in fact dimmable before securing any purchase. if you have further questions, please don't hesitate to ask us. The Bright greens are almost double the price, but in comparison, doesn't show a lot extra. My advice would be to try both if you are tossing up between the two, and do a bench test of the two. If you feel the brightgreen is worth the extra cost, then go for them, however I feel you will be happy with the Ecostar, and they usually retail for about $65 each inc GST, so definitely cost effective for a high end light.
