Browse Forums Lighting + Lighting Design 1 Apr 01, 2008 11:00 am I've got an electrical question for the "sparkies" out there....
We've bought some 12v low voltage exterior lights for the front facade of the house... we are going to have them on either side of the garage door and we have asked our builder to provide 2 junction boxes in those locations.... Because we've diverted from the 240v and are now going for the 12v lights, we will obviously have to use transformers.... BUT.....can we run both 12v lights off one transformer or do they have to be seperate? Is there a maximum length that two lights can be distanced apart to be able to use the one transformer? Its not the cost of the transformer that drives this question, but we're thinking it's less work?? Any thoughts? (Have i lost you??? Hope i've made sense???) Re: 12v light & transformer connection 2Apr 01, 2008 11:24 am usually if you bought the 12v exterior light it should come with the transformer. And its normally apart of the design and structure, thats why most of the 12v exterior lights look bulkier. So they use seperate transformers.
On the other hand (assuming there are no transformers on the lights itself), technically u can get 1 transformer and run the wire to the second light, distance is limited by the length of the wire. Re: 12v light & transformer connection 3Apr 01, 2008 11:43 am Thanks Ewan! Very much appreciated!
Hmm....now what do we do with our junction boxes that we paid for??? LOL Re: 12v light & transformer connection 4Apr 01, 2008 11:48 am The issue is not with the junction boxes P but where do the transformers go and how to hide them!
Re: 12v light & transformer connection 5Apr 01, 2008 12:23 pm mattwalker The issue is not with the junction boxes P but where do the transformers go and how to hide them! Oh no that's no problem... we'll semi box up (for airflow so it doesn't get too hot) the single transformer up and place it on the inside of the front wall of the garage if we have to....or put it in the roof cavity.... Easy fix!! Can you change the JB's to power points perhaps??? (cause you can never have enough of those in a garage!!!) Must check the wiring?? Re: 12v light & transformer connection 6Apr 01, 2008 12:29 pm You can put a GPO on but not plug anything besides lights into it!
The lights and powerpoints are on seperate circuits... Re: 12v light & transformer connection 7Apr 01, 2008 12:38 pm Derrrrr...silly me!!!!!
We were going to run 3 lots of fluro's in the garage eventually anyway, so that any "car" related work will have ample light..... we'll just move the wiring from the JB's around to where we want the extra 2 fluros ...only 1 batton light point will already be wired in the garage and we'll arrange the rest after handover. LOL....why didn't i think of that before!!! Re: 12v light & transformer connection 8Apr 01, 2008 12:55 pm The JB's would be wired to a switch inside the house???
If you change where they run how will they be switched? 3 48370 Hi all I'm currently building a duplex in Sydney and we need to do a new water connection to the second unit.
