Browse Forums Lighting + Lighting Design 1 Mar 27, 2008 9:28 pm Sorry for another dumb electrical question. I have a very little experience with changing light fitting before. Some of the good looking batten fix are labelled as DIY, but are they easy DIY?
Anyone has done the "changing" themselves? I want to change my standard batten fitting to the following: Re: Changing the standard batten fitting: are they really DIY? 2Mar 28, 2008 11:22 am Yes, it's easy.
Turn light on, then flick fuse and make light turn off. That's the most important part. Look at the fitting you bought, if you're lucky all you'll need to do is undo the top of the batten fitting, put the new fitting over the top, and screw the top of the batten back on. If not, pull globe out, unscrew batten top, then undo screws from fitting into ceiling. From there you can figure out how to hang new fitting, whether you can re-use existing batten innards or undo and rewire. And u can do as Al says: Quote : "Look at the fitting you bought, if you're lucky all you'll need to do is undo the top of the batten fitting, put the new fitting over the top, and screw the top of the batten back on. " Re: Changing the standard batten fitting: are they really DIY? 4Mar 28, 2008 11:52 am Good, then i dont have to spend $$ to ask the electrician to do it.
All and Ewan, thanks for your assurances. PS: Hi Ewan, do you have catalogue or samples of possible fitting? SAFETY POINTS Check more than one light, small chance but existing globe might have blown. Have someone else present in case it gose wrong. But ifyou turn the light on, and it doesn't go on, before you've pulled the fuse, then you'll already know the globe works....or doesn't. Re: Changing the standard batten fitting: are they really DIY? 7Mar 30, 2008 12:53 pm They are a piece of p1ss to do. There are even ones that look like low voltage lights that fit the same way. They're all pretty cheap. I paid $40 for a s/steel 4 light directional fitting that I have in the kitchen Re: Changing the standard batten fitting: are they really DIY? 8Apr 09, 2008 6:35 pm Sorry to say guys, but any fixed electrical works, i.e. undoing the screws on the back of the batten holder needs to be undertaken by a licenced electrician... This definetly is not DIY... your kidding right? these lights fit "over" the batten, a regular light batten has a plastic screw you can undo once the bulb has been removed, then these fit over the batten and the plastic screw goes back in place at no time does the batten get removed from the ceiling. any sparky would laugh at you if you called them out to install one of these lights, and take home $80 for the privilege. The DIY kits are so easy to instal. I haven't heard there to many problems with them, but i guess like any DIY, it ain't going to be like the real thing. The other downfall with DIY light battens, is that the variety is very limited. Nonetheless, i guess the DIY range has a niche market, and is doing ok. As for the safety side of things, while installing them, i'd be switching the main power to the whole house off (just incase you may have a blown bulb), and then carrying out the work.
