Browse Forums Lighting + Lighting Design 1 Sep 01, 2012 7:03 pm Hi There! This is our kitchen (Excuse the mess). http://s16.postimage.org/3lhinrn5t/2012_08_29_16_44_05_Large.jpg As you can see we have 2 x 4 50w Halogen Bars. I get significant shadow when working right now which isn't desireable and the 12v transformers that control two of each of the 4 lights in both bars have gone (Half the lights), and replacements seem impossible. I have been to 4 different lighting places and been given 4 (or more) different opinions, some places I spoke to two people and got different ideas from both of them. I am feeling confused and a little frustrated. We have considered a Pendant hanging bar format which is something I quite like (and would make a nice change in our kitchen I think), over the 3 single pendants my wife doesn't like, but I am getting varying opinions on whether this will be effective and look ok in the kitchen. I am wary of hanging light fittings as I am concerned they don't provide "upward" light which leaves the ceiling looking quite dark, though I found a fairly plain one which actually has an "up" light as well as a down light. I am questioning the fact it's a florescent, perhaps someone could suggest if we should avoid them? Someone else suggested a similar thing with LED, and I found a really nice one of those http://www.lightingdirect.co.nz/cardito-led-pendant , but again, concerned the light may not be as much as what we already have. Another suggested replacing what we have with something similar, but that has 35w x 4 Halogens and takes a modern and easily accessible transformer replacement, and then adding some LED Downlights for additional lighting! Yes I am a Kiwi posting on an Australian forum, as we don't have a forum this size in NZ that I could find. Re: Help - Lighting in the Kitchen 2Sep 03, 2012 2:01 pm Hi I have one of these http://micalighting.com.au/led-indoor-lighting/led-pendant-lights-ctc/anders100-pendant-light.html over our island (which is about 3m wide) and it gives quite good light. Over our other benches I have 5 LED downlights (equivalent to 50w halogen downlights) and then I have a 40W circular fluorescent fitting on the ceiling in the middle of the kitchen space to give general lighting. Paul Re: Help - Lighting in the Kitchen 3Sep 03, 2012 10:26 pm Thanks Paulw11 When you say 5 LED Downlights, which ones are you talking about and are you saying each LED is same as a 50W Halogen or the 5 LED's do the same as a single 50W Halogen? When you say 40w Circular Flourescant, 40W doesn't seem like much? I presume it's not the same as a 40W regular lightbulb, must be something else? Sorry for the dumb questions, I am still trying to work out the terminology and how to compare apples with oranges! Help - Lighting in the Kitchen 4Sep 04, 2012 7:10 am Hi The LED down lights are 14w each from memory, but they each have the size, appearance and light output as a standard 50w halogen downlight. Fluorescent lighting is more efficient than incandescent, so a 40w fluoro is about the same as 100w of incandescent. By itself this light isn't enough, which is why we have the other lights over the benches for task lighting. Paul Re: Help - Lighting in the Kitchen 5Sep 12, 2012 9:55 pm HI Kitchen lighting is probably one of the least visited yet most important aspects of home lighting. I would suggest Rail lighting and there are a number of options available but the most important part I feel is adequate Lux value Dean Dean Cato - CEO Murano Italian Decor and Glass Lights http://www.italiandecor-glasslights.com salesandsupport@italiandecor-glasslights.com Building Standards; Getting It Right! 1. optional, you can but normally just use the earth from the main switch board 2. should be enough but the distance determines voltage drop - sparky should work it… 1 28820 I have a really long hallway which is 1100mm W x 11500mm L I would appreciate if anyone can give suggestions to light it up with Linear LED lights that goes from wall to… 0 8822 What?
