Browse Forums Lighting + Lighting Design 1 May 28, 2012 5:56 pm Hi, Due to restrictions on Halogen downlights and not being convinced by LED downlights, I am considering using R80 Light Fittings with say 15w CFLs- i.e. http://www.beaconlighting.com.au/lighti ... white.html 15w CFL are certainly brighter than say 12v halogen down lights, but what happens to the brightness of CFLs when you stick them in the ceiling like the R80 fittings? I would fit them in say every 2 metres as you would 12v halogen down lights. Are they as bright as 12v halogen down light? Re: R80 Light Fittings- bright enough? 2May 28, 2012 8:47 pm The actual light output won't change, I suspect the heat would shorten the life of the bulb, but still outlast the halogens! As the inside of the fittings are usually white or reflective silver you may find the light 'output' is greater as the light that normally goes sideways gets redirected downwards, which will cause the same effect as a normal downlight being focused into a cone. Also with cfl lights they take a while to warm up, but the better lights warm up faster! 2 R80 Light Fittings- bright enough? 3May 28, 2012 10:08 pm That's good to know. Assuming the light output is the same, how much would the narrow beam affect the brightness. Has anyone used them successfully? I'm a big fan of 12v downlights, but I can appreciate CFLs. The cheap CFLs are crap, but I've used the Phillips one and they are great- instant start up and nice shade of colour. Re: R80 Light Fittings- bright enough? 4May 31, 2012 3:55 pm I'm not sure why you are not convinced by LEDs. The technology is there and they are so much better than CFLs. Light quality is far superior, not to mention CRI. They may cost a little more to install but a worth it, they save so much more in electricity, compared halogens as well as CFLs. You can get some that have the exact same light output as halogens (720 lumens), the same CRI but only use 10 watts of power. If you want to go up to 16 watts you get an even brighter LED with over 900 lumens. I wouldn't go near CFLs.
