Browse Forums Lighting + Lighting Design 1 May 06, 2012 5:47 pm Hi there, Just wondering if anyone can please advise on what sort of lights would be best for our back deck? We were going to have a roof, but have decided to postpone this until we have lived with the deck for a while (and saved some more money!!). The deck will be 10.4m wide and we will have 3 light points - one in the middle and one at each end. Should we be going for wall spot lights (which wont be very nice for sitting out under) or a wall oyster/bunker type light? I really have no idea of the best option so would appreciate any advice you can give - MANY THANKS! Here's the deck plan - only no roof now. Less power use, more robust and kinder on the eyes. The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Re: Wall lights for back deck with no roof...? 3May 06, 2012 7:15 pm Hi nina marie, Are they the only lights in the backyard? Do you have a big or small backyard beyond the deck? Where is your clothesline? Does it need light? Do you have a dog that may live in the backyard? Sorry lots of questions. I was just thinking that if it is just lighting the deck then I would be inclined to do some kind of wall/bunker light but if you need to light further then maybe a movable spot light would be better. Good luck. Re: Wall lights for back deck with no roof...? 4May 06, 2012 7:28 pm Hey rocketship and bash worth - thank you! Will bunker light project enough light? Rocketship - our deck looks out on to a downward sloping garden that leads down to some bush. We will hang a light under the deck to light up the garden for nice views. I've just realized that we were going to light the steps down from the deck as well, but now we have no roof no idea how we will do this as the steps go off the front of the deck - the opposite side to the house wall. Perhaps we put a double spotlight on this side of the deck with one shining out to the stairs as much as possible and another to light the barbecue area, that makes sense actually. And then bunker lights in the middle and at the other end? If it was me a bunker light on the edge of the deck above the mid point of the stairs would be my position. The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Re: Wall lights for back deck with no roof...? 7May 06, 2012 8:23 pm Honestly, I'm not entirely sure what I would do but the more I think about it - I think I would probably do something like this mounted on the wall Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ That way you can use it as task lighting and if it is too bright and annoying while sitting on your deck then you can move them to face up and away as more of an uplight. Best of both worlds, direct task lighting for BBQ or reading and uplighting for sitting relaxing or chatting. I'm probably the wrong person to comment though because I got my lights months ago and don't really like my external lights anymore!!
