Browse Forums Lighting + Lighting Design 1 Mar 01, 2008 4:18 pm Hi all,
Similar to another post recently, we have made provision for a light point to be above the mirror in our ensuite. We do have one central light in the bathroom that we may replace with a rod type downlight setup, as it can then focus on the walkway, the spa bath and shower. We thought that one light for the room may not be enough, especially requiring good light if you are going to be applying make-up etc (well, for me, not Matt!). Does anyone (Ewan?) have any suggestions as to what would look nice and be practical as a wall light above the mirror and basins? I prefer a stream-lined look where possible. We are having wall lights in our hallway over niches, and the same ones in the bedroom as bedside lights (coming from the wall), which are minimalist in design and would look pretty good in a bathroom. The come out from the wall and arch down. I'll find a pic and post it for you tommorow. Re: Light above mirror? 4Mar 03, 2008 2:02 pm I really like the lights H3nl3y use in their displays:

Knowing me, I'll want the most expensive ones! http://www.customlighting.com.au/produc ... m_Lighting I'll be looking for 4 of these types of lights too eventually. Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... If they do go better on the sides of the mirrors, what height should they be? and if they go above the mirror, how high should they be?
thanks Helen Re: Light above mirror? 6Mar 03, 2008 7:41 pm Go for your life Helen, fire away. I didn't know that about the above mirror lights...
Ewan, I like the first pic but my question is, how long is it? I've seen some in local lighting stores but they all seem to be about 60-90cm long, which I think might look odd above a bench and mirror that is approx 1.8m long? We only have one electrical light point above the mirror (centred) so I don't know how we would go about putting multiples over it, but we definitely can't put any beside the mirror (one side is the wall, the other is a doorway). The fact that it is recessed in a little box-like structure with only one opening - down - really directs the light. It also means you can't ever see any of the tube itself which means there's no glare. It's cheap, but fantastically effective.
When I come to replacing the bathroom I'll be making sure it includes another recessed tube above the mirror. (But everything else can go!) Re: Light above mirror? 8Mar 03, 2008 8:14 pm I prefer a light just above the sink on the ceiling.
Then an overhead, if you must, above the mirror. Remember there are different types of lighting. Directional and what I call orbital. Directional will provide light in a straight line…as lighting goes. Orbital will create lighting in a larger sphere. By putting orbital lighting above your sink you are covering a greater area. By putting directional above your mirror it will create a straight line down. Here are some examples of lighting – Directional….but able to be shone where you need the light. I wouldn't mind something like the bottom right one for the ceiling but probably wouldn't go so well as a wall light... Also, another point is now raised - should the wall light be a incandescent/energy saver bulb or a flouro? Maybe I should make the overheads bright, and keep the over-mirror as mood/softer lighting? Are any fittings ok in a damp environment (ensuite) or do they have to be special waterproof ones? Ray. Second Time 'Round Re: Light above mirror? 10Mar 03, 2008 8:57 pm Ray, all lighting is appropriate for wet areas. After all if you manage to get water on your lights we don’t want to know what you’re doing at the time!!!!
They don’t make them any other way. The ones I put into the motel….bottom photo, are appropriate for wall and ceiling. The 4 x lights are for ceiling only, but the others you can use for walls. These are an Australian distributor, and you should be able to pick them up in most lighting stores. As far as energy saving lights that’s up to you. I haven’t gone into that too much….all to hard with the variety around at the moment! I plan to have both in our new house. Too bad there isn't the same kind of range here that there is in the US for above the mirror lighting. Here's a sample: http://www.lightinguniverse.com/product ... erPage=300 Most of these kinds of fixtures can be gotten in long lengths. http://www.marquis.com.au/mirrors.htm Unfortunately no good for us as our vanity in the biggest ensuite is 1500mm and these mirrors are either 900mm or 1200mm - no wider as they would be too heavy.
