Browse Forums Lighting + Lighting Design 1 Nov 15, 2011 8:35 pm we have our electrical appointment in 2 weeks and so far are still undecided as to how we are going to light the house. can i ask peoples thoughts and ideas on best way to handle this i dont want halogen downlights - but am thinking led. however i am unsure of the brightness and how effective / how many i will need. lighting will be for hole house, main bedroom, 2 other bedrooms, study, home theatre, combined open space kitchen dining and lounge room, alfresco. i cannot find anywhere around newcastle that has led downlights on working display to get an idea of what they are like. not sure if we just get std batten fittings to rooms then fit ourselves and keep adding lights till we get what we want - would rather get as much done by buildr as i can as 1 less job to do when we move in ( there will be enough to do without adding to the list ) any suggestions on best plan of attack. what did others do in similar situation and what would you do different if any MDJ Homes - Bordeaux 14 + now with improvements help with new house and what lights to have 2Nov 16, 2011 5:02 am Hi there There are a few threads here about LED downlights (there is one in the What's New) area too. The brief summary is you get what you pay for. For around $100-$120 you can get a very good quality light that is every bit as bright as a halogen, with a 5 year warranty backed by a reputable Australian company. You can also get good lights for around $60 with a 2-3 year warranty, but claiming in 3 years may be more trouble than it's worth. If you import from China and buy 10 or more then you can get the price down to about $35, but you have no local presence for support. The one thing I am doing is I am getting my electrician to install '413' power sockets in the roof so that changing downlight fittings just requires unplugging the old and plugging in the new. I am not sure how much a package builder would charge for this, but the sockets cost less than $3 at the wholesaler and don't take any more time to connect that a hard-wired light, so there is no real reason for them to charge $$$. The sockets will also give me flexibility with the number of lights - If I decide I need more downlights in a room then I can use double adapters in the ceiling. Paul Re: help with new house and what lights to have 3Nov 18, 2011 7:51 am Beacon lighting has them on display. They have a little room that has a range of different types of downlights so you can get a feel for what each does. IMO - Led are far too overpriced. Re: help with new house and what lights to have 4Nov 22, 2011 7:48 pm We are having a mixture of these depending on which room; http://www.pierlite.com/my/16259 (36 of these) http://www.pierlite.com/au/18214/dot-92 (20 of these) as we managed to get them at a good price. They too are all flex and plug so they can plug into a "413". Slab Down: 2/6/11 Moved in 13/3/2012 Current Status : Waiting for the garden to grow. My build thread : viewtopic.php?f=31&t=47031 Re: help with new house and what lights to have 5Nov 23, 2011 8:35 pm Due to thermal performance, for our renovations, we elected not to use many downlight so as not to penetrate the thermal envelope of the ceiling and insulation. We ended up getting a lighting design done through one of the lighting shops locally (Sydney North Shore; they have several shops though); a fee is charged upfront, but is taken off the price of the fittings if you buy from them. Best thing we have done. Mainly a mix of uplights or wall washers, with LED strips (with integrated Al heatsink); total cost for internal lighting is just over $6K for a 4 bedroom house (we already have some of the more expensive feature lights). I feel that good lighting really adds to the house, and not having downlights means no glare. Re: help with new house and what lights to have 6Nov 23, 2011 10:09 pm Hi fifteensixty, My friend bought her downlight LED from this store below. Only around $20-30 each (warm white). they are good. But you have to install them yourself/call electrician to do it. Klassy Lighting Shop 3, 10 Newton St, Auburn. Ph 96481886 Contact : Yenny. So I'm just reading up on this ecosystem of lights.
