Browse Forums Lighting + Lighting Design 1 Oct 25, 2011 12:57 pm Ok so I have a couple questions about where to place pendents and hoping you guys can help me out. Question 1 - In the master bedroom I like the idea of having a pendent light hanging from the celing over the bedside tables. What does everyone think of these? I know you wouldnt be able to move the bed but other than that what does everyone think? Question 2 - Id also like to have a large pendent/chandelier hanging in the centre of a bedroom over the bed, would having this and the pendants over the tables be too much? Question 3 - In a very open plan layout when the kitchen/dining/lounge are in the same room, I would like to have 3 pendants over the kitchen island. However I also like the look of a large pendent over the dining table. The 2 spaces are right next to each other and Im not sure how it would look having 2 different types of hanging lights in the same room. Final question - I was thinking of just having batten fix light fittings installed as I know you can buy DIY pendents and also extention fittings for batten fix shades. What does everyone think about this? good idea or should I have hard wired pendents? Looking forward to hearing your opinions. Question 2- I think it would be too much with the bedside pendants. Personally I would prefer the bedside pendants and a nice fan over the bed. Question 3- I don't think it would be too much, as long as they were a similar theme. iykwim Question 4- you will have more variety if you weren't limited to battern fix lights. Good luck, I love buying lights! Re: A few questions on pendent lighting 3Oct 25, 2011 8:25 pm I don't know who you are building with but some of the bigger builders will only install battens or down lights as standard. If you want pendants you may need to get an electrician to convert the pendants to what you want after handover. The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Re: A few questions on pendent lighting 4Nov 23, 2011 8:42 pm 1. Great idea; we thought of going that way as well, but decided to go with more directional and adjustable lighting, so going with Tolomeo Minis 2. Bad idea; you will get glare in your eyes as you lie in bed. 3. I would use one or even two pendant over the dining table, as that would be a feature piece(s). But make sure there will be no glare, as you'd want to hang it lowish. The kitchen island can just have downlight, as that's pure task lighting, and you really don't want too many focal points/features in one room. 4. Hard-wired would be better. Re: A few questions on pendent lighting 5Nov 23, 2011 9:20 pm 1. I love the look of the bedside pendants (have seen it in quite a lot of display homes lately) but I have a feeling that it might be a look that dates. I'm still really undecided about the idea. My husband isn't a fan and because I'm not sure it made our decision not to have them easy!! 2. I think having pendants in the middle of the room and bedsides would be too much. Go for one or the other! 3. As long as they are in the same range, I think that you would be fine to have small pendants over the island and a larger one over the dining table 4. Go for hard wired if possible. It all comes down to personal preference. Maybe post some pictures of the types of lights you are thinking of using and your floor plan to give people a better idea. Good luck. Re: A few questions on pendent lighting 6Nov 23, 2011 10:13 pm we have the pendant lights (mini chandeliers) over our side tables and we love it. So much more room on your table. They might date, but only with the rest of the house, so dont worry about that. You can always update the pendant if you want to modernise the room anyway. We then had two downlights in the bedroom, but in hindsight I don't think it would have mattered if we put another chandelier in the room. Put what you like there, pretty much no one else really goes in there anyway. Kitchen: Def put 3 over bench, and as long as the dining table fitting doens't totally clash, put something grand there too. It's all personal taste really, if you like it, that's all that matters. Try to keep scale in mind with lighting. I love your thinking!! A thankful person is a happy person. [/color]My hobby design blog: http://aviewondesign.blogspot.com/ Re: A few questions on pendent lighting 7Mar 18, 2012 9:24 am Pendant lighting is really dependent on 2 things, size and scale of the actual light in relation to where it is going to hang and you are totally restricted by design but it doesn't have to be that way. Most lighting purchased from existing stores does not give you any flexibility in design, colour, number of lights etc so unless you can find an exact match for your requirements (which is almost impossible) then you may have to search high and low for a long time until you find something that comes even close. Think outside the box and look for lighting solutions that you can customise to suit your own needs, space and Decor. I'm doing it with the current renovations. And three over the kitchen bench is great, with lights I always think three or five or one, for some reason odd numbers seem best. Any suggestions for kitchen pendants? Re: A few questions on pendent lighting 9Mar 29, 2012 8:08 pm Hi Libby When it comes to pendant lighting, there are many options available to you and many different manufacturers. The main concern of course is your budget. Just look at the height of the ceiling in question, then the height of the object you wish to hang the fitting over. A general rule is 2/3 of the height between the ceiling and the surface of the object below should be left as open space so you really need to be careful about what you choose Dean Dean Cato - CEO Murano Italian Decor and Glass Lights http://www.italiandecor-glasslights.com salesandsupport@italiandecor-glasslights.com Re: A few questions on pendent lighting 10Mar 29, 2012 10:56 pm Answer 1:-New idea, looks good, give it a go. How often do you move your bed now? If you're like me you only move the bed when you move house. Answer 2:-No to third light. Do you live in a hot climate? If so maybe put a fan over the bed. Answer 3:-Maybe put a 4 spotlight bar over the island and in the dining/lounge have matching drums or pendants. Answer 4:-Everyone else here is suggesting hard wired lights but they are forever. I think you should stick with your suggestion of batten fix and DIY pendants. If you have kids there are are some great DIY and you can update as they grow. I think there is now a much bigger range of DIY than before. A lot of people won't buy them because they regard them as cheap but I have them as I would rather spend $1,000 on something other than a bloody lightshade. This is the batten fix in my front hall-----------------and I want this DIY pendant Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Regards, Grumbles Re: A few questions on pendent lighting 11Mar 31, 2012 10:14 am I would love to see a pic with pendants over the bedsides............. can anyone put up a link to a photo? cheers Re: A few questions on pendent lighting 12Mar 31, 2012 3:33 pm A couple of links http://lampegras.fr/index.php?p=modele&n=214 http://www.madaboutthehouse.com/2012/03 ... de-lights/ http://www.circleoflight.com.au/pendant-light.html http://adreamhousefortrish.blogspot.com ... rence.html Regards, Grumbles Re: A few questions on pendent lighting 14Apr 04, 2012 11:21 pm What a gorgeous bedroom!
