Browse Forums Lighting + Lighting Design 1 Feb 07, 2008 7:00 am I notice the use of lights down the side of driveways and paths don’t appear to be popular.
I’m curious if these are ever considered or maybe they’re not in vogue. Looking in the lighting shops there appears to be quite a good range and styles of both 240v and 12v fittings at what I consider affordable prices. I’ve seen a couple of places with them along side the driveway and or paths and thought they looked quite good. Anyone have any thoughts on them? Re: Driveway lighting 2Feb 07, 2008 8:25 am Hi kiwi056, if you are talking about lighting that is in-laid into the driveway, then this topic has been mentioned on occasion on the forum.... i think from memory, the train of thought is there is a lot of work behind the installation, it needs to co-ordinated into the pouring of the concrete or laying pavers etc...
I think most people can't be bothered.... Plus what happens if they break/stop working... might not be such an easy fix??? If it's just running down alongside the driveway, then hey that's easy....but how many of us have long enough driveways to pull that look off??? We had ours stolen in our last house.... 12 lights... cheeky devils came right up to the front door to get the last ones too. Regardless, i think that both options look great....gives great visual impact to a house IMO. Re: Driveway lighting 3Feb 07, 2008 9:02 am Hey Phoenix
I was more thinking of bollards or up lighters in the garden beds to wash over the driveway/footpath etc. I think pouring a small slab of concrete in garden beds to bolt bollards too shouldn’t be too difficult. I’m sorry I should have done a search before posting, although the flush mounted or brick lights in walls would be a nice option also. My preference for lighting is they are a highlight, and also illuminate the area where they are located, as opposed to being decorative. I've seen a couple of places that are using them with the standard 5mtr setback. One has them located in the garden leading up to the front door. That is a problem, and certainly would put me off considering them if it happened to me. Re: Driveway lighting 6Feb 07, 2008 2:32 pm I believe they are the style of light that Phoenix was alluding to before. These types of lights are great for effects but I do wonder how much light is thrown laterally.
When I next go past one of the places in the evening I'll try and snap a photo. Re: Driveway lighting 8Feb 07, 2008 7:47 pm I used the camera in my phone to capture these on the way home tonight.
These are situated in the garden running alongside the drive towards the front door. The house would be the standard 5mtr setback. I will try and get a night shot (not tonight though) showing how they look when its dark as an overall effect. I agree they look good and would be perfect for your type of drive. Some friends of ours live on acreage and their driveway is very long and straight for most of it then winds up and around to the house. Besides having a camera and intercom located at the front gate, plus motorised gates all operated from both the house and the garage, they also have lights along the driveway which is great when leaving late at night. It's great to see that you have spent so much time exploring your exterior lights. Obviously you are someone who knows exactly what you want. With driveway lighting in particular, your options are: - recessed in-ground lights, - posts / bollard lights - garden lights (that can light the outer edges of the path / driveway. - etc. Lighting has always been a tricky issue, as different fitting with different globes, will create many different visual light outcomes.
