Browse Forums Lighting + Lighting Design 1 Oct 13, 2011 7:37 pm Hi Everyone i need some help with some downlights. We are renovating our home and we are wanting to put in new downlights. I have no idea what are the best brands, what size, halogen or led. All help would be great. Thanks again Re: Which are the best downlights? 3Oct 24, 2011 4:45 pm Hi friendlytigger1978 we were just discussing that above in the thread downlights for new home. I had the same question and went for LED downlight kits which are complete and run straight off the main so you don't need to buy seperate lamps, fittings and transformers. I just bought them today 12W downlight kits which are similiar size to standard halogen fitting here is the link to them http://www.trimenergy.com.au/shop-onlin ... -dimmable/ best is to call up the different companies and speak to them directly for LED. The other option is CFLs I have a few fluoro globes in my place but they flicker at night whilst I am trying to sleep so I was looking also at the option of fluoro downlights (it seems to be quite new) as I thought these might be better, they are little tiny CFLs but discovered from reading other forums that they can constantly flicker as well and a friend renovated her flat she put 3 fluoroescent energy efficient fittings in from beacon lighting with 3 globes per fitting 1 bulb broke in her hand as putting it in, another two have burnt out within 2 months and each one of those small fluoro lamps is $13.5 I think. So sometimes the cheaper upfront option is not the best. The whole reason you should be looking at energy efficiency is the 5W per square metre rule now I know this is applicable to new dwellings but I am not sure if it applies to renovations, I am pressuming not. Hi Saving energy is a good idea and I would encourage you to look at efficient lighting, but something that doesn't seem to be widely mentioned is that the 5W per square meter rule in the BCA only applies to apartments, not houses. Paul Where did you find that the 5W per square metre rule only applies to apartments as it mentions home or houses or dwllings everywhere. I have looked everywhere and it states that it applies to all new dwellings and major renovation works, if this is not met you may not be granted a certificate of occupancy. Secondly it would not make sense to constrain this to apartments only, what would they be trying to achive by that when majority of dwellings are houses. Which are the best downlights? 7Oct 26, 2011 7:40 pm Hi If you search on the net you will find lots of sites that talk about it in reference to houses, but if you check the actual BCA you will find that it only applies to class 2 dwellings, which are apartments. I bought a few days access to the BCA so that I could accurately answer the inane questions I was getting from council. Re: Which are the best downlights? 11Nov 09, 2011 1:27 pm I know in Victoria, it definately applies to houses every major builder we have talked to has mentioned it. 1 11262 4 9189 Hi im new to this forum.
