Browse Forums Lighting + Lighting Design 1 Jul 13, 2011 8:36 am We took out some downlights from our contract after deciding they were a little large and a bit ugly - all the wiriing for them is done but the builder has installed batten fixings instead. Feel like LED downlights may be the best way to go but wondered how simple it would be for a sparky to install them. If we just but some LED downlight kits off the internet can they just be substiuted in place of the batten fixings - or is it more complicated than that and is there anything specific we would need to look out for when buying? Thanks for any help Re: Changing Batten light fittings to LED 2Jul 14, 2011 11:00 pm Hi It will depend on where the batten fitting has been installed. If it is attached to a roof truss then you can't put the downlight in the same place because you will not have the necessary clearance to fit the recessed fitting. You may also find that a single LED downlight in the centre of the room may not give enough light as the light is more directional than a bulb in a batten. Electrically the change over will be pretty straight-forward, but if you have to move the light then you will need to patch & paint the hole where he old fitting was - again not too difficult.
