Browse Forums Lighting + Lighting Design 1 Jun 01, 2011 1:07 am Has anyone bought lights from the US? I have found something that looks good and I can't find a local supplier. I'm wondering how hard it is for a sparky to rewire light fittings to Australian standards. Re: Buying US lights off the net 2Jun 01, 2011 9:00 am We lived in the USA for a couple of decades and brought back some lights with us. It cost nearly $50 to rewire a simple bed lamp. We had trouble finding globes which fit but eventually found some non-standard ones which worked. Re: Buying US lights off the net 3Jun 01, 2011 9:10 pm Me. i love lighting from America - they have such beautiful, gorgeous lighting. I am obsessed with their lighting. My father in law is a licensed electrician so he converts them for me - its a bit of a pain for him but it's not that hard. I use shipito to have all my US purchases sent to me. Re: Buying US lights off the net 4Jun 02, 2011 12:33 am I've gone off what I was looking at yesterday but the US thing may still be an option. They seem to have a lot bigger range than we have. I've hit all the local websites again but I still haven't nailed the perfect exterior light. I'm getting a head ache from searching now. Re: Buying US lights off the net 5Jun 10, 2011 4:25 pm I just bought my dream light that has been on my wish list for years back from US while I was on a trip for work. Its a 4ft capiz shell pendant. Our sparky had no problem with the rewiring and everything has worked out perfectly. The company I bought off (West Elm) don't do international delivery so I was lucky to have gone there. The lighting range they have in US is sooo much better than here. I contacted Littman Bros in the US and they said they can supply them wired for Australian standards. Although I expect the manufacturer to know what the Australian specs are I just need to confirm them with the supplier. I'm looking at US$110 each versus the AUD$275 if I get them in Melbourne. Add in a couple of hundred for shipping and I'm still paying just over half price on a quantity of 4. If anyone knows exactly what the differences between ours and the US standards feel free to speak up. Re: Buying US lights off the net 7Jun 16, 2011 8:14 pm I am not an electrican so can't say what our sparky did to our light. I think it had something to do with the voltage or something - I think US have lower than Australia. Can of Coke and a choccy bar for you, ourdiydream Domestic lighting in North America is 110-120 volts, we're 230 volts. Re: Buying US lights off the net 10Jun 19, 2011 4:30 pm I'll have to give this idea a miss. I asked the builder what the standards are and in turn he asked their sparky who said he would not install them if they didn't have an Australian standards stamp. I've chased up three suppliers off the web so far: 1. Ebay.com.au vendor will ship to Australia - no response to my emails 2. US retailer who ships internationally - Nice people but no help, a bit too hard for them 3. US retailer who ships internationally - no response. Re: Buying US lights off the net 11Jun 20, 2011 10:53 pm The one I bought has the same light bulb socket as Australian so I just have an aussie light bulb in it. Have you tried European websites? Their standard is 230 v. I looked at 1 UK website and they were 50% dearer than here. Even with the European fitting my electician maybe a bit iffy. Anyway I've gone ahead and ordered locally. ust have to wait 3 months now. The E27 thread for the Edison Screw lampholder is the same, it may not be rated for 230 volts though and will have to be replaced. So I'm just reading up on this ecosystem of lights. I'm planning on putting deck lights along the outside edge of a large deck. Will need about 3 packs (18 lights) plus… 0 23012 Yeah I don't know why I came to a forum. Place is full of wierdos/pedos thought internet may help but I suppose I'll try my luck with someone in person. Cheers. I tried… 0 6388 I couldn't attached the photo for some reason.
