Browse Forums Lighting + Lighting Design 1 Apr 02, 2011 11:58 am At the moment the current plan for the home theatre room has 6 lights on 3 switches (sets of two going back from the screen) with a dimmer for each... I'm concerned it'll look crap and bulky. Is there a product which combines the 3 swtiches and dimmers on a touch-screen type panel? It doesn't need to be connected to any home automation system or do anything other than turn the lights on, off and dim them. Ability to save settings would be an added bonus Building Masterton Overture Re: Touch switches and dimmers 2Apr 09, 2011 12:23 pm Hi It has been awhile and no one has answered your question, so I thought I would give it a go. Unfortunately I am not aware of any thing that can do what you are after aside from home-automation type systems. You don't have to go with a fully integrated system - it can be limited to the one room - but the costs can be considerably more than straight-forward dimmers. Particularly if you want a touch screen (You are now talking $1500 plus just for the screen). Clipsal C-Bus is widely available and there are a large number of electricians who are trained. As a minimum to achieve what you are after you would need a four channel dimmer with power supply (Retail = $530) and a "key unit" (switch) to select various "scenes" - A DLT which has an LCD display so that you can label each scene costs around $360 retail. A 4 button switch without the display is around $200. Depending on the switch unit you can get ones with IR control so that you can use a universal remote to control your lights too. For more information on C-Bus go to http://www.clipsal.com/cis You can also ask questions in the home theatre and automation forum here at Home One. Another option that is now available in Australia is the Insteon Z-Wave series. These have control units (dimmers) and remote control switches that are linked by radio signals. The dimmers cost $99 per circuit (You would need 3) and a four button remote control is also $99. The controllers can also be controlled by hard-wired press buttons (short press for on/off - press and hold for dimming). The Z-Wave requires an external application or control system for scenes. Both C-Bus and Z-Wave can be controlled by devices such as iPhone/iPad/Web browser although this requires additional equipment. Paul Re: Touch switches and dimmers 3Apr 10, 2011 3:21 pm Thanks for the advice, I guess what I was really looking for was a more aesthetic appeal, rather than application. But that being said, I also want the ceiling mounted speakers and limited home automation in other rooms, so maybe home automation is what I'm after Building Masterton Overture Re: Touch switches and dimmers 4Apr 11, 2011 1:32 pm Hi
Another option I thought of is the new Clipsal Saturn range These have smaller dimmer knobs and a modern glass/chrome look. The linked brochure shows a plate with a single dimmer knob & a push button on/off switch, but you can get the dimmers/plates/switches separately, so your electrician should be able to make up a single plate with three dimmers and 3 push buttons. It will still cost around $400 though. If you do go this route, you will need to work with your electrician as the Saturn switches need the neutral wire at the switch, which normally isn't there. Paul Re: Touch switches and dimmers 5Apr 26, 2011 11:23 pm the problem there is switching the power to the lights..........we recommend cbus as it is a good system to use. i have never seen a unit that switches and controls ....
