Browse Forums Lighting + Lighting Design 1 Feb 14, 2011 8:43 am Hi, Need some advice. We have been told that halogen downlight fittings are no longer allowed to be put into houses due to a government ruling last year. As a result, you can only put Fluorescent downlights in, which are 15W and need about 3 times as many compared to halogens to obtain a similar output. Obviously the low voltage fluorescents have a better energy efficiency, but you have to use a ridiculous amount to achieve practical light. We were also told that LED's are no where near up to standard and were not really an option. Interestingly, Bunnings are still selling halogen kits!! Really need some advice as to what the real situation is, as after much googling I can't find anything to substantiate what we were told!!! Re: Lighting Options - Told Halogen downlights not available 4Feb 14, 2011 3:40 pm We also installed Brightgreen's led downlights last year but our electrician got them for $115 each. We are very happy with them and receive lots of comments from our visitors. Re: Lighting Options - Told Halogen downlights not available 6Feb 16, 2011 10:41 am There is no ban on Halogens. Complete Rubbish. Re: Lighting Options - Told Halogen downlights not available 7Feb 16, 2011 1:34 pm Hi Donna I think our sparkie was able to negotiate a better price because we ordered a large quantity. Im not sure which wholesaler he used but Ill email him and get back to you. Sue Re: Lighting Options - Told Halogen downlights not available 9Feb 17, 2011 8:39 am Although halogens are not banned, it wont be long before they are. The new BCA coming in July will pretty much get rid of them as they will now affect star rating. I`m considering installing them in the near future but i`m unsure of how effective they are in regards to brightness and light spread. Thanks Phill Re: Lighting Options - Told Halogen downlights not available 12Feb 17, 2011 12:04 pm You can use halogens. But if you are going to use them, consider the IRC halogen - 35W for the saem light output as a 50W. With regard to CFL, I used 13W CFLs throughout the house on the same spacing as halogens and it looks fine. And if you think it's too dul there are 15W and 18W CFLs that can be swapped in. In all cases I'm talking about 240V bulbs with a GU10 fitting. The beauty here is that you can readily move between halogen (IRC or not), CFL and LEDs. Phil I'm sorry I don't have any pictures but I noticed Brightgreen has started a facebook page with a few photos on there. The brights are very bright and I believe you can pick between a 45 and 55 degree beam width. Hope that helps Sue.
