But regardless, do you think 13 downlights is overkill? Re: Is 13 downlights in the kitchen overkill??? 2Jan 23, 2011 5:44 pm Honestly yes. Which ones would you delete and which ones would you keep? Re: Is 13 downlights in the kitchen overkill??? 4Jan 23, 2011 5:54 pm I would delete the ones over the bulkhead, probably reduce the number of the ones beneath the overheads to 2, scatter a few around and maybe have a feature (or 2 or 3 feature pendants) over the island (speak to a consultant ) My building thread : viewtopic.php?f=31&t=36059 Paid initial deposit 24/7/10 Tender appointment 20/8/2010 Flooring and tile appointment 25/9/10 Colour and Electrical appointment 13/9/10 December site start delayed Site start (YAY!) 17/1/11 Slab pour 1/2/2011 Re: Is 13 downlights in the kitchen overkill??? 6Jan 23, 2011 6:11 pm Rizzo I say yes too. I think too many downlights can make a ceiling look like a runway! I would do some pendants over bench and delete the bulkhead ones. Agree. we have 3 pendants with halogen lamps in them, 2 downlights over the kitchen area and 1 downlight over the sink. so the equivalent of 6. it's BRIGHT! and that's less than half of what you have. Re: Is 13 downlights in the kitchen overkill??? 7Jan 24, 2011 10:20 am Thank you all. Now I'm thinking 3 over 4m island 3 between island and overhead cabinets (5m long) 2 under the overhead cupboards Re: Is 13 downlights in the kitchen overkill??? 8Jan 24, 2011 12:14 pm Good lord you wouldn't need a stove to cook - just turn on all your lights!! We have a massive area all open plan that incorporates kitchen / dining / living. We have 4 downlights in the living area / four in the dining area / three downlights in the kitchen / three pendants over the island bench. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Is 13 downlights in the kitchen overkill??? 9Jan 24, 2011 12:59 pm blueblueblue - it might be easier if you can upload the plan - or just that section of the plan if you are not confortable to post the full plan on H1. I'm inclined to agree with less downlights. If you don't want pendants above the island - talk with the electrician on what type of downlights you need as some have a different light spread so you might need a wider beam (e.g. 60 degree) - if you go with the narrow beam - more like a task light - you will end up with bright spot lights on your island bench and darker areas. No need to have so many downlights in the kitchen/bulkhead. You will be using the ones under your cabinets/rangehood and the island ones for cooking. Depending on the size of the kitchen 2 would be enough. As well if looking at hallogens I would probably go for the 12V - 35W IRC lamps 60 degree - brighter and less energy consumption. What are your kitchen dimensions like? Re: Is 13 downlights in the kitchen overkill??? 11Jan 25, 2011 8:47 pm Gee I'm glad it's your powerbill but you clearly don't care about greenhouse gases! The other thing to consider is how much natural light comes into the room? Our area is approx 10m by 12m in an L shape. We have 4 windows plus two banks of bifolds (1 x 4 panel, 1 x 5 panel) so get masses of natural light. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Is 13 downlights in the kitchen overkill??? 13Jan 25, 2011 8:52 pm lisanne Gee I'm glad it's your powerbill but you clearly don't care about greenhouse gases! Thanks. If you read my original post you would have noticed that I wrote that not all downlights will be on the same switch so not all will be on at the same time. They are there to provide me with more flexibility. Is 13 downlights in the kitchen overkill??? 15Jan 25, 2011 9:05 pm Huge house LOL 55sq!! We don't have any formal areas - this is our main living area. Then there is another massive room adjoining for the kids toy room!! Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Is 13 downlights in the kitchen overkill??? 16Jan 25, 2011 9:07 pm Is 10m x 12m your living area which includes the kitchen or just the kitchen? Re: Is 13 downlights in the kitchen overkill??? 17Jan 25, 2011 9:17 pm blueblueblue Is 10m x 12m your living area which includes the kitchen or just the kitchen? LOL 10m x 12m is very slightly bigger than our entire 3 bedroom two living area house (7m x 17m) Re: Is 13 downlights in the kitchen overkill??? 18Jan 25, 2011 9:19 pm my kitchen is 6.150x2.670 Preliminary agreement 23/11 Contract 22/03 Prestart 06/04 - finalised on 30/04 Unconditional approval 10/05 Demolition 05/07 Slab 26/08 Brickwork 13/09-06/10 Roof frame started 07/10 viewtopic.php?f=31&t=32292 Re: Is 13 downlights in the kitchen overkill??? 20Jan 25, 2011 9:55 pm Our main living area (which includes kitchen/ dining/ family) is about 10.5 x 7.5m and has about 16 downlights PLUS 3 pendant lights over the island bench and 4 lights in total in the overhead cupboards (which includes a light inside the glass cabinets and at the bottom of each overhead cupboard) That is 23 light points in total and I realise that does sound like a lot for an area that is just under 80 square metres. HOWEVER they will be on separate switches and it would be highly unlikely that they are ever on at the same time (and with the type of downlights we are having- we are using energy efficient globes) We saw a few homes where there were big patches of darkness and shadow where they downlights hadn't been placed well and we were advised by electricians to space them like we have. The lights would probably only be only on for a short time around meal time and then turned off when the kids are in bed...but we wanted the flexibility. No. It's not original. Circa early to mid 90s would be my guess and maybe even as late as early 2000s 1 6632 2 4680 that will depend on the kitchen bench depth. you'll have to specify it so it allows for both the tap and the sink 1 7394 |
