Browse Forums Lighting + Lighting Design 1 Jan 13, 2011 1:59 pm Hi everyone, I recently saw in a lighting shop MR16 LED globes which I'm keen to try. Our current home setup is just the normal halogens with the MR16 fitting and transformer. Can I just plug the LED into the existing MR16 socket? Have no idea about these things. Thanks in advance, Jack Re: replacing halogens with LEDs 2Jan 15, 2011 5:31 pm From what I managed to find out so far is that the mounting is the same but the driver is different? I just ordered some samples from China so when They arrive I may have more info contract 10/11 prestart 04/10 slab 06/10 bricks 07/10 roof 09/10 plaster 10/10 Ceiling 10/10 LOCKUP 10/10 tiling wet areas 11/10 garage floor 11/10 PCI 12.01.11 handover 11.02.11 https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=39361&hilit=malvern+springs We are in !!! Re: replacing halogens with LEDs 3Jan 19, 2011 3:22 pm You should be able to plug most 12V LED mr16 globes into most standard 12V transformers. What agabob says above is correct for complete fixtures as LED fixtures use drivers not transformers. I say 'most' with some reserve as I have seen quite a few issues upon initially fitting and after time (few months) 95% of mr16 bulbs I have tested are poor quality and will be lucky to last 5,000hrs let alone 50,000 http://www.ledsmagazine.com/news/7/12/3 CRS sell their bulb for around the 50USD showing that in regards to quality you get what you pay for. As much as buying products direct from china can save some money most of the things being brought here are not certified in Australia and could leave you in a tight spot if the house burned down due to said product. Re: replacing halogens with LEDs 5Feb 03, 2011 12:24 pm I'm using 9W LED MR16 replacements in standard MR16 fittings with electronic drivers. So far I'm happy with the results but don't believe anybody who says a 9W or less equals a 50W Halogen for light output. A 9W is flat out equalling a 35W Halogen. My install is a new house so to make up for a lack of light output I've upped the quantity of lights used or mixed them with CFL fittings to reinforce output. I'm also using Warm White and they give a nice sparkle to the quality of light...CFL light is a little "dead" for my my liking. How these things will last is anybody's guess...so far no blown bulbs after about a few months use, more than I say for the halogen 35W GU10 bulbs in the outside lights. BTW LED replacements for these work well if a little whiter in light colour. Re: replacing halogens with LEDs 6Feb 07, 2011 8:03 am Now that LED products are growing in the market, the thing that needs to be looked into is not so much the wattage but the lumens per watt. For example a 100 lumen per watt product would replace a 50w halogen with around 8W yet a 50lm/w product would need 16w. Iceworkz is probably correct in saying that any 9W product currently does not fully replace a 50w halogen (especially in a mr16 base) The other compounding factor is that as efficiency goes down heat output increases. Re: replacing halogens with LEDs 7Feb 09, 2011 5:25 pm Has anyone come across this http://www.led-depot.com.au/....saw the sign on roadside while driving today. Re: replacing halogens with LEDs 8Feb 21, 2011 12:19 pm Iceworkz I'm using 9W LED MR16 replacements in standard MR16 fittings with electronic drivers. So far I'm happy with the results but don't believe anybody who says a 9W or less equals a 50W Halogen for light output. A 9W is flat out equalling a 35W Halogen. I'm using a GU10 9W LED, and the light output would be close to a 50W halogen; it's certainly noticeably brighter than a 35W GU halogen. If you want a warm white, it's not for you though, as it's a pretty neutral white (not a blue white of some LEDs). Re: replacing halogens with LEDs 10Feb 22, 2011 10:35 pm LEDenthusiast What brand GU10 are you using PHL? Something off eBay actually; didn't have high hopes, but was pleasantly surprised. The seller doesn't have any in stock ATM, or I'd post a link. Re: replacing halogens with LEDs 11Aug 19, 2011 4:47 pm Is there any way to know if an existing transformer for halogen MR16 will work with LED MR16? I don't want to have to spend 50 bucks just to trial one light. For instance is there a spec on the transformer which will confirm this? Re: replacing halogens with LEDs 12Aug 22, 2011 12:26 pm The hard thing is that some transformers have 20w-60w printed on them but work fine with a 5w bulb, usually the lower minimum wattage the better. 2 8293 Yes, get a builder, make sure he is experienced and a registered building practitioner 5 8934 Hi, we live in an area where the black soil is prone to a lot of movement.
