Browse Forums Lighting + Lighting Design 1 Jan 09, 2011 1:20 pm I was just looking at the Dining Room light thread and I was wondering...our Formal dining and Formal Lounge are both quite big rooms and are joined, so should I have the same light fittings or should they be different? There are 2 fittings in the lounge and one over the table in the dining room. What does everyone think? www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: Joint room, same or different lights? 2Jan 09, 2011 1:30 pm I would go for a different fitting over the dining table a pendant type fitting about 1.6 m off the floor so it just illuminates the table and the people sitting around it. When you having ameal you should be looking at the food and the other people around the table not looking around a big room The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Joint room, same or different lights? 3Jan 09, 2011 1:33 pm See I am the opposite!! I like matching things so I would have matching - maybe where there is two fittings use a smaller version with a larger version for the single outlet. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Joint room, same or different lights? 4Jan 09, 2011 1:43 pm Our Formal Lounge and Formal Dining are also one big long-ish room (but that's the result of our changes - we preferred not to have that little bit of dividing columns/walls coming into the room and 'forcing' the division line and limiting the space ... now we can't even guess where the original division would have been). Anyway, because it's just one room now, we'll have them the same. My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Joint room, same or different lights? 5Jan 09, 2011 1:53 pm Just typed up a big post and lost it! Grrr! I think it comes down to personal preference. If the furnishings are similar in both rooms, I'd keep similar styles for the lights too. Trying to find some pics as examples... I'll keep searching... but most I'm finding are matching in style. Re: Joint room, same or different lights? 6Jan 09, 2011 3:30 pm Mmmm ok. I appreciate your responses. Thanks so much, I guess it will be trial an error? Or should I say buy and refund? Maybe I could get the same type of lights in the same material (eg. cane or fabric) but in a different shape OR I could use the same lights but in different colours eg. fabric but chocolate in one room and orange in the other. So then the theme continues but the subtle differences will define the spaces? www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: Joint room, same or different lights? 7Jan 09, 2011 3:31 pm themax Mmmm ok. Will start the hunt The hunt is half the fun take your time and enjoy... oh and show us what you find Re: Joint room, same or different lights? 10Jan 09, 2011 4:01 pm I agree with the same but different approach... like Erin has her dining pendants all in a row, and the same pendants in the living room but centred in a staggered hanging bunch. nice! we have the same but if I wanted a different look for one of them I'd have no problem doing a different one. They are just both decorated in the same casual modern style and I do love my pendants even though they are dust collecters, so I have the same. A picture of your area might help too themax? Re: Joint room, same or different lights? 11Jan 09, 2011 4:09 pm TM, I originally wanted matching pendant lights. However, the lighting consultant suggested that the 2 rooms would be too busy, since I already had 2 large table lamps in the lounge room. What we were advised to do instead was to install unobtrusive d/lights in the lounge room so the emphasis would be on the tablelamps & use a dramatic pendant in the dining room as the focal point. I guess you need to decide whether you want a focal point or not & then decide in which room it's going to be. I quite like the effect http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg89/leah6363/loungedining007.jpg Southies, thanks. That's good advice, I will think on it. We hardly ever use these rooms. www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: Joint room, same or different lights? 13Jan 09, 2011 4:21 pm LOL your last house furniture looks fine to me! oooh could you continue the theme of your staircase pendants in your formal room/s maybe...? Re: Joint room, same or different lights? 14Jan 09, 2011 4:21 pm That window in the dining room is almost floor to ceiling and I will be eventually making a feature outside the window, so, I wonder if I should not make too much of a statement with the light over table? It will be obtrusive. www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: Joint room, same or different lights? 15Jan 09, 2011 4:25 pm I was going to agree with Southies about making a statement with the lighting over the dining room table and keeping the living room simpler but that does make it more confusing (the outside feature). Good luck with it. My post has been entirely useless to you! Sorry! Re: Joint room, same or different lights? 16Jan 09, 2011 4:28 pm Any thoughts are welcome & appreciated fb! Yes I just threw a spanner in the works didn't I? I just realised about the window. I feel a sprkkly wine coming on....best get to cooking dinner. Thanks everyone. www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: Joint room, same or different lights? 17Jan 09, 2011 4:31 pm hmm maybe you could get a "flush to ceiling" version of the pendant that you put in the lounge area? there were flush versions of my pendants... or just do two flushes. or make a feature of the lounge room light and make that a bit different.... just throwing ideas out there "Your emotions are the slaves to your thoughts, and you are the slave to your emotions." — Elizabeth Gilbert Living in our new house. Re: Joint room, same or different lights? 18Jan 09, 2011 4:45 pm I think our room/s are approx. same size (although it looks like we have a totally different floor plan for this room and the surrounding rooms too). Love what Southies wrote as I was feeling the same - nothing too busy and eye catching (for us) and definitely nothing that hangs low. It would, firstly, jusy be overwhelming and secondly, long ones wouldn't even be practical (having to fight off a low hanging pendant into which I'd ocassionally get entangled - ). Anyway, do you have high ceilings? If yes, then you could afford something hanging on a bit longer cord/wire. Me - I'll be going for something "light" (ie. not bulky) and fairly close to ceiling. Would love a "statement" light somewhere, but it would be totally wrong in our room. For this room, I'll probably get us a Fiorelli 3 (or maybe even 5, but that would be pushing it - it's more suited to higher ceilings), or just the lovely Hunter which is quite close to ceiling and therefore head-friendly . Both are "light and airy" in design and wouldn't interfere with the rest of the decor. My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Joint room, same or different lights? 19Jan 09, 2011 5:59 pm Yes we have 9ft ceilings Lex so it is something to also take into consideration, good point. That "flush" idea is also another good idea donuts....I'll sleep on it. www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: Joint room, same or different lights? 20Jan 10, 2011 7:51 pm kyton See I am the opposite!! I like matching things so I would have matching - maybe where there is two fittings use a smaller version with a larger version for the single outlet. +1 from me. I think having the 2 x smaller versions will help keep things in proportion! Not sure if you have seen what we have over our dining table - its a long black oblong light with 5 globes - in our rumpus next door to the dining which is open and can be seen from the dining - we will have the same texture/fabric but in the big round one... the rumpus is quite large and hoping that the round one will look in proportion. Hope this helps - cant wait to see what you choose!!
