This isn't a huge deal for me except (1) they blow SO regularly and thus cost money in replacement bulbs, not just extra electricity, and (2) aren't they phasing out old style globes soon? 2. Lights that DO take energy efficient globes...if they looked nice before, they certainly don't once those big twisty globes are in place!!! I've seen places with spotlights and these globes just stick right out! You can see them! Also, I have a nice lamp but now it's got an energy efficient globe in it, it looks bad. It just doesn't SUIT it! How do people get around this? How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Energy saving light globe issues 3Nov 04, 2010 6:19 pm Philips offer a halogen replacement for the standard incandescent globe, they use 30% less power than the old globes and still retain the old style glass outer envelope. The name escapes me for the moment though... Re: Energy saving light globe issues 4Nov 04, 2010 7:52 pm If you go to a lighting store you will find a good range of energy efficient gloves that aren't twist - they have a regular round frosted bulb shape - much prettier for when part of the light is exposed. Bunnings have a few too, perhaps more down there in the big smoke. Re: Energy saving light globe issues 5Nov 05, 2010 12:29 pm Oh wow, I’ve never seen these! I’ve only ever bought those globes from Target and stuff, and never noticed any “normal” style globes. I just assumed they didn’t make them and there was no choice, cause as I said before, so many places I’ve been to have used the twisty globes in lights and lamps that don’t suit them. Do the normal style globes come in warm light or just the cold type? I like warm light. HATE cold light! *shiver* How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Energy saving light globe issues 6Nov 05, 2010 1:29 pm A specialty lighting store should have what you're looking for. Most of the big brands have a 'warm' cfl range now. HATE cold light! *shiver* Re: Energy saving light globe issues 8Nov 05, 2010 1:37 pm Here is a link to the Philips brochure. http://www.lighting.philips.com.au/apr/upload/australia/cfli_range.pdf There are several other brands as well. I know the Philips ones are available at our local Bunnings so in theory shouldn't be too expensive? You can see there's lots of different shapes in the covered styles. Quote: They come in both... thanks to my hubby... we have a pendant containing BOTH warm and cold lights! Looks terrible! I dont know how males can consider things like as being 'acceptable'... That must look "interesting" My Dad very kindly went and replaced our loungeroom bulbs with energy-saving ones. He says he searched (a man-look I bet) and couldn't find the twisty shape ones so our light covers are now dangling on the top of the bulbs since the straight bulbs are too long for the cover to fit properly! Gotta love em... Re: Energy saving light globe issues 9Nov 05, 2010 8:44 pm Ah Bunnings, how I love thee. lol I was on the Beacon Lighting site before and saw they also have these types of non twisty / big eco bulbs. They're $12-$13 each...hmm. I guess they do last forever though pretty much. How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Energy saving light globe issues 10Nov 09, 2010 3:21 pm I must have scored a dud batch, with a pack of 2 of the halogen low wattage globes (won't name the brand) but they only lasted 2hrs each! Emailed the company to complain and never got a response! Will be replacing all of the cold globes in my place after handover and prefer the normal style light globes. Some people don't have time to do the job right the first time, but seem to have plenty of time to fix their mistakes. Build Thread Re: Energy saving light globe issues 11Nov 09, 2010 4:50 pm How I hate thee energy saving globes! I wish someone had told me the old ones were going to be phased out cos I would have developed quite a stockpile and maybe sold some on the black market Even the "warm" lights are too fluorescenty (if that's a word) and don't give anywhere near the nice subdued light that the old globes gave *sigh* and I agree with you Grace- there is nothing worse than being able to see the horrible Mr Whippy type things. In any event, back to the topic...as others have said you can get "normal" looking globes- I bought one from beacon when I got a light fitting there (where you would be able to see the globe from beneath) and it only cost about $3. I've also seen them in Bunnings for a couple of dollars each so have a look around. Hope that helps Re: Energy saving light globe issues 13Nov 13, 2010 8:01 pm Oh wow, I've never heard a buzzing sound from any of our globes!! lol How the hell did I become a senior member!?
