Browse Forums Lighting + Lighting Design 1 Sep 27, 2010 5:36 pm Ok, well obviously it's fairly easy to do this for an electrician, but my question really concerns how to "fix" the ceiling afterwards? We've got oyster lights throughout, you know, stuck to the ceiling, but I'd love hanging lights / chandeliers instead...but would the base that's attached to the ceiling have to always remain? They're quite wide / circular, and obviously the new hanging light wouldn't have this...but if you take OFF the oyster base, you'd be left with...what? Damaged ceiling? A hole? This may be ok if the ceiling were just plain, but we've got those vermaculite or whatever they're called ceilings, that look as if seagulls have walked all over it while it's still wet? lol How do they neaten up that so the light looks good and is worth buying? How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: How to change ceiling lights from oysters to hanging? 2Sep 30, 2010 3:09 pm It sounds like you are going to have to patch the ceiling somehow as most hanging lights I've seen have a small base on the ceiling. We replaced our oyster lights in the hallway with downlights and we had to replaster and paint the ceiling as a result (it was needed anyway and we have smooth ceilings). Good luck! Re: How to change ceiling lights from oysters to hanging? 3Sep 30, 2010 9:47 pm I did this in my entry, replaced an oyster type light with a hanging fixture with a much smaller 'footprint'. My problem was about 20 layers of paint as I think the oyster light was original. It took quite a bit of sanding to eliminate the ridge of old paint, then undercoating and painting. Re: How to change ceiling lights from oysters to hanging? 4Jan 30, 2013 10:32 am Bugger! We want to replace oysters with ceiling fans and it looks like we'll be faced with the same problem. Current house has a low ceiling, so the oysters here a fine, but the new house also has them, with nice high ceilings that I'd like to take advantage of... Today is under construction. Thank you for understanding. Re: How to change ceiling lights from oysters to hanging? 5Jan 30, 2013 11:41 am How about some sort of small ceiling rose thats the diameter of the light being removed (or slightly larger) to cover the missing area of vermiculite? Hi, you've probably already resolved this, however, Commbank will probably pay the funds to you after you send evidence the work is done regardless the change in the quotes. 1 35312 5 10471 2 2963 |
