Browse Forums Lighting + Lighting Design 1 Jun 05, 2010 6:37 pm I have just purchased an existing home I’ am currently renovating it top to bottom and would like to change the look of my down lights (gimble style) they are everywhere! I would like to install some pendant drop lights & more decorative style down lights I have seen in Light shops instead, however there seems to be a problem, these new type of lights have a small ceiling hole requirement than the ones already installed. I’ve been quoted a small fortune to have the ceiling patched up then have the new lights installed! I don’t wish to replace all my down lights I just want to do a few places i.e. the kitchen, hall ways & theatre room. Is there a retro fit system that allows me to leave the existing 92 mm down light collar in when replacing it with a pendant drop rod light or the more decorative style down lights now available? Thus having no need to patch a hole? What options can anyone suggest please ? Re: Wanting to renovate existing Down lights. ? 2Jun 21, 2010 6:22 pm Unfortunately 92mm is a big downlight hole, most halogens and many CFL's are 70mm If there are heaps of holes you may find it easier to re-sheet the ceiling and then just re-set it. Re: Wanting to renovate existing Down lights. ? 3Jun 21, 2010 10:46 pm There is a retro fit to put in a new downlight... If you check out the downlight that we have in the lounge it is a stainless ring that you can put a new downlight in (got it from Bunnings) I'm pretty sure you can get it in white too. Hope you can see it - let me know if you would like a photo without the light on! We move out this weekend so get back to me quick! Hope it's of some help! Good fun to try and get into the holes, what I did was assemble the light into the adapter ring (including connecting the globe and the 3 pin supply lead then fitting the whole light into the hole. The clips are strong on the adapter ring so be careful. They were used to replace some early 1970s vintage Kemthorne "eyeball" downlights and have made a difference to the area where they were fitted. Re: Wanting to renovate existing Down lights. ? 5Jul 24, 2010 11:17 pm Hi All, my apologies for late reply have had major problems with internet service all fixed now ! Thank you for your suggestions. As to the ring adapter available already I was aware of these but to use them with the amount of down lights I have in each room would make my ceiling look like its full of metal rings. I have had a quote patched each hole in the ceiling and that was $600 for the 1st hole and then $150 per each hole after, and for the number of down lights I want to do its about $3000 just to patch up the holes then I have the re paint the ceiling & the new fitting & installation costs on top its just to expensive to achieve by this option. Some possible good news I believe that their is a new product being developed for the exact job. My wife came across this info read below on her Facebook page in the adverts.
