Browse Forums Lighting + Lighting Design 1 May 25, 2010 10:49 pm Hi everyone, We just had our electrical appointment today and and advised the electrical consultant that we're going to install downlights in our kithen, dining and living areas after handover (they cost $120 each through our builder!). We get one batten light for each room and our electrical consultant told us that it would be easy to install downlights later because the sparky could just run the wiring from where the batten lights are (sorry, I hope I make sense here, I have no clues at all). But after reading a few posts in this forum, it looks like we're gonna need to add junction boxes and separate switches for each group of downlights (say, 3 downlights in kitchen, 4 in dining area, 4 in living area)? Could someone please enlighten me here? We only have 48 hours to make variations to our electrical plan! Thanks heaps. Re: another downlight installation question 2May 25, 2010 11:35 pm that would be correct, you would need to add a separate switch circuit for each bank of down lights you want to switch separately. that is normally quite difficult to do later and i would recommend that you have the current electrician run these wires before they close up the ceiling. Re: another downlight installation question 3May 26, 2010 8:33 am Thank you! So when I call my electrical consultant today, I will ask her to add 3 junction boxes and switches for each bank of downlights? Where should I install the junction box? In the ceiling somewhere? Re: another downlight installation question 4May 26, 2010 9:46 pm yes in the ceiling. if you dont have access to the ceiling void via a trap door / aircon duct or something like that, then you can ask them to the junction boxes next to one of the light fittings so that when an electrician comes in later on, he will know exactly where the additional circuits are. good luck !
