Browse Forums Lighting + Lighting Design 1 May 18, 2010 10:43 pm i just wanna say i make a really HUUUUGE mistake and i don't know how to fix this without costing me more $$$ which i don't have.
Kitchen bench pendants have always been the bane of my existence. I actually started looking for them since last year when i haven't got anywhere yet. I then found this three nice pendant that i really really really wanted from Ikea and doesn't cost me much. So i went and got them. Then i had it installed and the next day i went and have a look at it and it's A FUDGINGGGG DISASTERRRRR! I actually wanted to cry. And what follow after was worst. But here's some picture of the style i wanted because a picture worth a thousand words: Mind you i was looking for some sort of industrial style kitchen light.... and i always wanted a big pendant... but maybe not too big.... i'm still not convinced it's too big but EVERYONE ELSE seems to think so. I'm just heartbroken. This is the style i was after: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ or here: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/ny/best ... mps-055706 or this is EXACTLY what i was after: (note on how low this sits) http://www.housetohome.co.uk/galleries/ ... l?subslug= Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ or this Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ >>> *** i deleted my kitchen pic*** <<< I have a 9 foot ceiling so it's pretty high and i had wanted to get this lowered. But the electrician told me that if it's any lower, people will not be able to see pass it and that it will be right on your face. I wanted to lower it slightly because i really hate seeing the TINY LITTLE BLACK WIRE because i wanted the wire to be LONGER for aesthetic purposes. (see "ideas" picture above). I have installed plenty of downlights in the area so the lighting is just an aesthetic. and yet i'm also told that aesthetically it would pretty much be IN YOUR FACEEEEEE so it will look UGLY. The picture i have in my head was that those lights were meant to be in your face but now i'm being told that it will look UGLY. Well it looks SUPER UGLY RIGHT NOW SO REALLY WHATS THE DIFFERENT?????? ARGHHHHH Though I am being told that it looks "okay" at the moment, but i actually really really really FIND THE LOOK SUPER UGLY RIGHT NOW. I drove 6 hours to get those lights. And i'm still convince even though everyone said it will look ugly, it will work for me because i'm short anyway. But why can't other people see it? As it is standing at the moment i really hate how it looks and I don't even wanna look at it. I am considering on getting something else. Not that i have the $$$ for it and i can't return those lights i already bought. Great. Spare lights in the shed already. ARGHHHHHHHHHHHH input? ideas? or maybe i just need someone to tell me: It's your house, you pay for it, you can have it whatever way you want. Re: Help me, i Mess up my pendant lighting =( with pics =( 2May 18, 2010 11:23 pm moimoimee or maybe i just need someone to tell me: It's your house, you pay for it, you can have it whatever way you want. Oh yes, you are absolutely right . You tell that electrician to hang them EXACTLY the way you wanted. How dare he give you HIS opinion & ignore what you want And yes, I agree......your pendants just don't work hanging soooo close to the ceiling . What was he thinking ??? Get the electrician back to lower them "But why can't other people see it?" who cares what other people think? It's your house so do what you like and forget what other people think, you're the one who has to live with it. Re: Help me, i Mess up my pendant lighting =( with pics =( 5May 19, 2010 9:29 am May be try using 2 only and lower them so that way it is not that crowded if only 2 sits lower and you will still get what you want. Personally I think it will look much better having 2 only as your bench is not that big. I am just throwing an idea... Re: Help me, i Mess up my pendant lighting =( with pics =( 6May 19, 2010 9:37 am I would lower them - if you plan on sitting at that bench - it doesn't really matter if it obstructs vision when you're standing. I feel better now. I was so mortified yesterday. Kinda wanna dig a hole and just stay there because i don't wanna deal with it. Anyway, I understand fully that it was me who messed up and none of this is anybody's fault but me (and that makes things worst), even if it was installed that way. I am definitely going to lower it down, but i may keep it at 3 pendants for now even though it looks too big and bulky (or in your face as some would call it). This is because i was thinking of replacing them in the near future so i'm just going to keep the option open instead of replacing them with two pendants and getting them closer together because there be some massive patching job to do and i really don't want to already be drilling lots of holes on my ceiling seeing i haven't even move in yet. I did thought about maybe just having 2 pendants, but i was thinking i really wanted three in the first place and this would all be fixed if i get another pendant types and ones that aren't soooo huge. and yes. Definitely lesson learned. Re: Help me, i Mess up my pendant lighting =( with pics =( 13May 26, 2010 12:12 am what you could do is take the middle one out and put a downlight in it's place. no patching, highlights the pendants, low cost and less clutter. think about it, hope this helps. Maybe you could print out that pic you have posted above top show the electrician so he knows exactly what you want as far as the other lights go? They are nice though. www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: Help me, i Mess up my pendant lighting =( with pics =( 16Jun 14, 2010 7:46 pm From an electrician: -If I got the job of fitting these off, I'd do as asked. Reason is that if after a week of the lights being installed as requested, you'd find out if the height was right. If they're too low, raising would be a 30 minute job as most of the work has been done. -Black isn't your only option for the wire from the light to the ceiling rose-white, silver or whatever colour is your liking could be used. I know you were keen on black but it seems that this could be changed if required. -A shadow may be a problem with the downlight to replace the centre light and then the two outers dropped. A globe with a narrow beam may work for the downlight-experimentation is required to get this right. I can see what the installing electrician was getting at for the height-he may of fitted off a squillion of these lamps and had callbacks on umpteen due to being too low. A word to all-don't be scared to find someone else to do the job if the first person won't do it-the only exception is if you are told that what you want is illegal or dangerous as I know I'm rather fond of my licence as it puts steak on the BBQ and beer in the fridge. Have a great week! Re: Help me, i Mess up my pendant lighting =( with pics =( 18Jul 20, 2010 10:56 am If anyone's interested to find out the afterward story... we did moved in to the new place for over a month. The lights had been lowered since then and I am very happy with the height of the lights as it is exactly as how i wanted it now. I've used it a lot when i'm cooking because it's great for reading french cooking books because they always print their text super tiny. It also looks pretty when i turn all the lights off in the room and only have those three on. Safely to say nobody had bang their head on it, nor anyone having been blinded by how close they are to those lights. I may change them in the future if i find something else i like more but at the moment i'm satisfied with my choice because i pick them myself and no matter what other people think, it's my house and i like how it looks as i am the one staying in the house and paying the mortgage. Thank you very much for the words of wisdom, suggestions and especially encouragement that i can do whatever i wanna do since its my own place. Thank you.
