Looks like I'm going to try to get the 12v globes replaced with 240v globes... Let us know how you go with your experimenting, masada... Re: Help! 12v LED downlight globes = TV interference 23Apr 02, 2010 12:08 pm Well you wouldn't believe it, I was able to fix my problem with just new quad coaxial cable. Having visited Jaycar they advised to 1st replace the old cable with quad cable and then if no success buy the old black brick copper coil diver/transformers. So, bought the cable and hey presto!! solution found. I really didn't think it was going to be that simple... Re: Help! 12v LED downlight globes = TV interference 24Apr 04, 2010 10:48 pm Over the weekend, the seller also suggested I try a "Nelson" transformer from Bunnings. But after reading your comment re: cabling, I know the cabling from the antenna to the amplifier is old beige single-shielded cable. I'll run new quad-shield cable tomorrow and see if that solves it, like it did for you... Re: Help! 12v LED downlight globes = TV interference 25Apr 07, 2010 10:07 am I am glad I came across this post. Thank you all. I experienced exactly the same problem when I replacing the halogen lights with LED lights. I took the approach of gradually replacing them one by one over the course of 2 months due to the cost of LED lights. And because of this my HDTV started to show "weak signal" intermittently at first and slowly getting worse which led me to believe that the problem was with the TV. Until one day, I turned the light off and the TV came to life, EUREKA!. Thought I shared my experience with you. Thanks again. Re: Help! 12v LED downlight globes = TV interference 26Apr 07, 2010 10:23 am installation inspector The TV-antenna amplifier is under the house, as is the antenna wire, and it's nowhere near the light circuit wiring, so that rules out that possibility... Is the TV-antenna amplifier itself under the house or is it just the power supply under the house providing power for the amplifier mounted near the antenna? The optimum place for the amplifier is immediately under the antenna as it amplifies any interference that is picked up by the coax antenna cable between the antenna and itself just as effectively as it amplifies the wanted signal. Even the best coax cable has a relatively high attenuation for the UHF band, so a run from the antenna to under the house will attenuate the wanted frequencies, and provide a good chance to pick up unwanted interference from downlights into the bargain. Re: Help! 12v LED downlight globes = TV interference 27Apr 07, 2010 4:58 pm The power lead on the plug-pack for the amplifier isn't long enough to reach to the top of the antenna. The amplifer is directly beneath the antenna, but under the house, so I can understand what you're saying about interference being injected before the amplifier. The amplifier is about half-way between the top of the antenna and the antenna outlet for the TV. Come to think of it, the fact the PC also suffered from interference would mean the interference is being injected before the amplifier as you mentioned. I'll replace that cable (from antenna to amplifier) first as it's also exposed to weather and probably the most deteriorated out of the two old cables still present. I could extend the ELV power cable to relocate the amplifer somewhere up the mast if I had to... Re: Help! 12v LED downlight globes = TV interference 28Apr 07, 2010 7:35 pm The amplifiers I'm used to can use the coax cable to take the power from the power pack to the amplifier. Is that a possibility with yours? Pfiff Finally making progress again, with a clothesline (yippee) and some much needed little things being attended to over the holidays. 40 C on New Year's eve? We love our a/c! Re: Help! 12v LED downlight globes = TV interference 29Apr 07, 2010 8:22 pm No, my one has a separate round (12v?) power jack connector. Re: Help! 12v LED downlight globes = TV interference 30Apr 08, 2010 8:09 pm This morning I replaced the cable from the splitter box to the tv outlet and channel 9 works fine with 5 of the 12v LED globes turned on (however channel 7 is jittery, which is still better than before when it had a blank or frozen image). So that is some progress. I found there was damage to the UHF cable next to the antenna (possibly by cockatoos), and when I disconnected and tested it, there was a dead short between signal and shield conductors. The small box which joins the antenna cable to the antenna terminals was full of rust and one of the wires leading out of it was broken from the circuit board. I tried to pick up a new box this afternoon at Di(k Smith and Turks, both of which don't stock them, but was advised of another local company that does (although by then they would've been closed). I temporarily connected the end of the antenna cable to the antenna terminals (without a box with leads on it) so now all cabling has been replaced, and there is no further improvement than from this morning. I also tried connecting the main antenna cable directly to the splitter then using the power by-pass output terminal to connect to the TV, while unplugging all other leads and the amplifier from the splitter, and that had no affect on reducing the interference either. I highly doubt the 35mm (max) of unshielded signal wire going to the antenna terminal is enough to pick up the interference, so perhaps the next option might be to relocate the whole antenna (mast) to the other side or back of the house. This might be more effort than rewiring for 240v LED globes, but considering I've reduced the interference somewhat from new cabling, relocating the antenna might in fact resolve the issue... It might be time I employed the services of a trained/experienced antenna person for their expert opinion, or even better - find one that's got an interference measuring device (if such a device exists)... Re: Help! 12v LED downlight globes = TV interference 31Apr 10, 2010 7:03 am That is interesting progress because I can confirm that I still no longer have interference from the LED downlights but I do have static interference that is having an impact upon all channels except abc 1 & 2 and have been considering replacing my very old antenna. So based on your experiences Installation Inspector I might get out this morning and go shopping in our favourite electronics store... Re: Help! 12v LED downlight globes = TV interference 32Apr 10, 2010 8:21 am Just stumbled upon this forum as I was doing a bit of research this morning. I is very worthwhile reviewing the multitude of advice that is available http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?showtopic=12098 Re: Help! 12v LED downlight globes = TV interference 33Apr 10, 2010 8:50 am I forgot about that forum, thanks for reminding me of it... I just tried to connect up the new balun box and even after being told by the salesman that they are a universal fit, it does not fit. I did discover that channel 9 is VHF and the other channels are UHF, and it's the UHF that is more susceptible to the interference from the LED's. I'll read up on the other forum and I'm sure I'll find a more detailed and technical answer there (and will post a reply in laymans terms here when I do)... Re: Help! 12v LED downlight globes = TV interference 34Apr 10, 2010 12:34 pm On a hunch I got back under the house disconnected the antenna power booster and just ran the straight quad cable from the aerial to TV and now I have totally perfect reception without any interference. My summation is that the power booster was required with my old coaxial cable but when i replaced it with the quad cable the power booster somehow overcompensated and interfered with the reception. Now with it out of the way its plain sailing for me. Re: Help! 12v LED downlight globes = TV interference 35Apr 10, 2010 1:48 pm How old is your antenna? From the reading of the other forum thread I have read that a corroded antenna can also be the cause of the problem. Mine is pretty old (and an even older one disconnected under the house!) so perhaps my next step should be replacing the UHF antenna rather than movong the whole mast... Re: Help! 12v LED downlight globes = TV interference 36Apr 10, 2010 3:31 pm My antenna is at least 15 years old by the looks of it when I replaced the coaxial cable it was somewhat rusted but I chose to go with what I had rather than replace it. Mind you this morning my initial intent was to purchase a new antenna, however that hunch paid off by removing the additional power source. Re: Help! 12v LED downlight globes = TV interference 37Apr 18, 2010 9:31 pm I've given up investigating possible solutions to this problem and returned the globes to be swapped for 240v versions, and expect them to arrive early next week. Hi there, long-time lurker but first time posting. I've bought a house 2 and a bit years ago and last year we had some major water damage on a converted pergola area… 0 7932 Yes, unless you are in a low intensity rainfall area or the area is protected from rain.
