Browse Forums Lighting + Lighting Design 1 Jan 07, 2010 7:30 pm We are just starting to think about lighting options for our place. Although we haven't got to that point yet, I assume the builders will be able to give some guidance on where/how many/what type to use, but just thought I'd jump the gun and start thinking about it now! Have put this plan together, but am absolutely open to all opinions or thoughts! Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Hit me with your ideas people!! ... Re: Help with lighting layout 2Jan 07, 2010 7:34 pm Great design. I would add a two-way switch so that when you enter the house you can turn off the light down the passageway. I would add more down lights in the main areas - 4 may not be enough. I'd also switch the downlight in the kitchen to a fluro light. You need good lighting when you are cooking so one downlight may not give off enough light. You may also like to consider a spot light/s over the kitchen sink/bench area. Re: Help with lighting layout 3Jan 07, 2010 8:02 pm Thanks for your ideas! I think the two-way switches for the hallways are a fantastic idea! The kitchen has been causing me some concern - I would like to avoid a fluro if possible, but was also worried that there wouldn't be enough light. Here is a picture from the display home, it kind of shows where some of their lights are. I guess normally I would just put the lights in the same place as they had, but as I want to change the lights above the breakfast bar to pendants, I think I'll need to do something slightly different to what they have done. I also thought about which lights i wanted dimmers on. You might like a light in the pantry to come on when the door is opened. and as a kind of side thing - but electrical all the same, i thought about where i wanted the powerpoints. Re: Help with lighting layout 8Jan 11, 2010 5:32 pm Hi bobbin_84, unless you've seen the display home lit at night, I would take its lighting with a grain of salt. Our builder (so I'm assuming others as well) keeps prices down by not allowing enough lighting & this is reflected in their display homes. We will need about 3 times the amount of lighting they provide Re: Help with lighting layout 9Jan 11, 2010 5:48 pm Well, I've been having a think about it - and took a very enlightening trip to IKEA. Think I'm going to stick with the original 3 downlights in a row, then use these pendants over the bench Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I also found these, which I think I'll have put in under the over head cabinets Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I had a look in our current kitchen, and that has 3 downlights which seems to give me enough light. Quote: We will need about 3 times the amount of lighting they provide The display home that we went through had soooooo many lights in it! I can't imagine needing any more than they had... Definitely something to think about though! Quote: You might like a light in the pantry to come on when the door is opened. I think that's a fantastic idea! Will definitely be asking about that!! ... Re: Help with lighting layout 10Mar 25, 2010 12:36 pm nice lighting plan. i saw a show home at aldinga beach with four downlights like the lounge room you have. but more towards the corners. with a feature light in the middle. it looked pretty good. Re: Help with lighting layout 11Mar 25, 2010 12:49 pm I have two square fluoros in the middle of the kitchen area and two double downlights over the island bench, as well as the lights under the overhead cupboards, the fluoros are not that bright and I tend to use those more than the others, it is quite a soft light. What about a downlight in the cloak room? Re: Help with lighting layout 12Mar 25, 2010 5:41 pm Assuming your rangehood has a decent light, I think your kitchen should be OK....but I'm with little buddy re adding a light to the pantry. It's not fun rummaging around in the dim, dark depths. It doesn't have to be fancy, since no-one will see it. And I second suh on the cloakroom light. One thing we did at our consultant's suggestion, that I'm very pleased with, was to add a two-way switch to the bedroom lights. One switch at the door; the other next to the bedhead. Then I don't have to walk back across the room, turn off the light, and stumble into bed in the dark. Just a little thing, but it makes me happy. You may want one more exterior light on the blind side of the house - especially if you have HWS or water tanks or anything along there. Nothing worse than trying to investigate a problem at night by torchlight. You never have a fridge against wall as you’ve drawn. The doors can’t open past 90 degrees and it’s difficult and maybe impossible to remove drawers 2 15609 Thanks for the suggestion. The space between shower and sinks was too tight. I agree about the toilet location. So I have tried two other options: The lower one is… 3 6142 Possibly both depending on the sizing. Idea of working from the centre is that you dont have a 20mm thin tile at one end and a 400mm at the other end. A quick search on… 3 8423 |
