Browse Forums Lighting + Lighting Design 1 Nov 04, 2009 1:11 pm I'm wondering what people did whilst building re: light fittings. I was thinking about buying some light fittings as I see them, whether online or at a store. We are keeping an eye out for some exterior ones too and happy to get the exterior ones whenever we see them. I would be interested to know what other people did, whether you brought lights along the way or waited until you moved in and then get your light fittings? We were planning on waiting for the after Christmas sales etc. I have found a gorgeous light that I think I just "must" have however of course it's expensive. What dilemmas you faced by waiting/getting them earlier before moving in. What have people paid for their lights in which they feel guilty about. The one I have found is between $450-650. But it would probably be the most expensive one we have in the house. Re: Lights whilst building house. What did you do? 2Nov 04, 2009 8:00 pm We are building atm & are buying light fittings bit by bit as we see them on special mostly from Beacon. We are glad that we are doing it this way because every light that we have chosen has been out of stock & it usually takes a few weeks before we get them.If we had waited until after the house was finished there would be a delay in getting them. The most expensive light was about $400 for the entry.I never thought I would pay that for one light but it was sooooo pretty that I couldn't resist & even DH liked it!! We have even found some lovely light fittings that are DIY & the rest we will get the builders electrician to install.Beacon have a good sale later on in the year on ceiling fans so will wait for that as we are having fan/lights in the bedrooms. I think it's a good idea to buy them a few at a time during the build so they are all paid for when your house is finished...one less thing to worry about!! cheers, Loretta Built The Jenmark with Cavalier Homes Macarthur. http://camdenacres.blogspot.com/ Thread - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=17870 We are in - front landscaping begins Re: Lights whilst building house. What did you do? 3Nov 04, 2009 8:10 pm i bought most mine in one hit from online store (Great service ) after weeks of online looking and visited 2 stores ( we dont live in/near a big city) bought some pendants and garage lights when i found them. Re: Lights whilst building house. What did you do? 4Nov 05, 2009 8:20 am I haven't bought any yet. I thought if I buy alot in one go, I will get more discount, rather than buying in dribs and dabs, and besides I have enough stuff to move already, I don't need the worry about breaking my new lights. Re: Lights whilst building house. What did you do? 5Nov 05, 2009 8:26 am We left our lights until we saw the eleco to finalise the lighting plan. Once he walked through the build with us then we went and bought the lights. We pretty much knew what we wanted and had bookmarked sites and written down shops that we had visited. The hardest lights were the ones for the bedrooms as we wanted specific types - ended up getting every bedroom light from Freedom which really surprised us. Our dearest light was for our foyer and even it was only $300. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Lights whilst building house. What did you do? 6Nov 05, 2009 9:49 am Thanks for the different advice. What I think I might do is we will just buy as we go along especially to ensure we don't miss out on any lights we see and love at the time. The other reason we don't want to particularly wait until we move to get lights is that we will have so many other expenses to worry about. I love Mica lighting and also Beacon have a few I don't mind. Thanks everyone. Much appreciated. Re: Lights whilst building house. What did you do? 8Nov 05, 2009 4:03 pm Went to a couple of lighting stores today and was overwhelmed. Got talking to the owner who seems to know what he is talking about and I think I have a clearer idea now. I love a particular light from Mica that I might get soon and then just work out what to do with it later. I think the hallways will be the hardest to choose as I have no idea. I thought we would have some sort of chandelier but now not so sure as we haven't seen one that we love yet. So I'm just reading up on this ecosystem of lights.
