Browse Forums Lighting + Lighting Design 1 Nov 03, 2009 12:01 pm Here is the plan for our open plan living/kitchen area and alfresco. All the lighting in this part of the house will be down lights (except for the laundry). We cannot change this plan so hoping to be able to work with it.
As we have pendants throughout most of the rest of the house with CFL warm white bulbs I would like the colouring to match and I would prefer the energy efficiency of the globes. We initially based our plans on using halogen down lights but I'm thinking that I might like to try CFL's instead. So my first question is do we have enough light points to do this? The great room section is 8.6m wide and 4.4m deep. Alfresco is pretty much the same and the kitchen is only slightly narrower. There is eight light points in the great room, eight in the alfresco and eight in the kitchen. My understanding is that CFL down lights don't omit as much light as the halogen but are there any that do? Also the lighting in the great room will have dimmers on them. I saw a previous post about being able to dim CFL's but I can't find too many options. ETA I should mention that our ceiling height will be 2740 on this level! I was surprised at how much more light the give off compared to halogen as they light up more of the surrounding area. Re: Advice on my downlights please - plans attached 4Nov 12, 2009 12:00 am Hi the lighting layout that you have shown is typical of a halogen 50w 38deg based system. you are right, the CFL down lights definitely dont emit the same output as halogen fittings. realistically they would produce maybe half the lumen output. if as you say you can not change the layout or qty of lights that you will be using in the ceiling then my recommendation is that you try install some cfl or dedicated fluorescent wall up lights to get your lighting levels up to scratch in the great room. for the kitchen area, if you can incorporate some under counter lights to properly illuminate your surfaces, then using CFL DL would be fine as overhead lighting. for your Alfresco area, i think this should be fine just with the overhead CFL DL's as typically people incorporate candles or other table based light sources to create some atmosphere. with regards to dimming the CFL down lights, i have not seen any reasonably sized products on the market that will be able to be dimmed. their are a few cfl retrofit lamps with E27 base that claim to be dimmable but are huge in size and dont dim so smoothly. when they get down to 0% - 30% their is quite a bit of flickering.if you want to dim fluoro then you will need to get fittings with specific dimmable ballasts built in. hope this info helps Re: Advice on my downlights please - plans attached 5Nov 12, 2009 7:21 am Thanks Oz Lighting. I think we'll have to stick to halogens then as we can't make any changes or additions to the plans - that includes the wall lights you mentioned. And we can't do any after handover as we only have a 4 degree pitched roof - essentially it's flat. Not to worry! Worth a try. Hi, I'll be starting on my verandah repair soon - replace ledger, rafters, roofing iron, flashing etc. (fascia board already done). My question is about the timber ledger… 0 930 Versaloc is a mortarless besser block system that still needs a properly engineered footing. If you just do a 400x200 footing it will fail in time. At 17m long you need it… 1 3173 |
