Browse Forums Lighting + Lighting Design 1 Oct 21, 2009 2:21 pm I need a fanlight for a dining area which will give off a really bright light. (I like to see what I'm eating, although DH wouldn't necessarily agree ). Currently we have a fan wired with a normal ceiling light fitting which looks really ugly. I have looked at the integrated fanlights but all seem to have a white frosted glass which seems to cut the light level significantly. I don't like the type with 3 seperate spotlights, does anyone have other suggestions? Thanks Re: Bright Fanlight - ideas please 2Nov 16, 2009 11:00 pm Hi Kazza thats a tough one, typically ceiling fans offer poor quality lighting especially to a dining room. i know that Mercator have some fans that take either 100w halogen lamps or 60w E27. depending on the size and space of your room, these may work for you. check out - http://www.ozlighting.com.au/Ceiling-Fans-C18.aspx Re: Bright Fanlight - ideas please 4Nov 17, 2009 12:05 am We've got Hunter Pacific Concept fans in the bedrooms. These take a halogen bulb which can be bought in various wattages. We've got the equivalent of 100w bulbs, and they're pretty bright. The fan is really quiet too. Nearly $300 for plywood? You've gotta be kidding! Built the Eden Brae Cambridge 34 Family with Boston Corner Facade Re: Bright Fanlight - ideas please 10Jan 05, 2010 9:00 am we had this query too. Like you i wasn't keen on the 3 spotlight type look. we were told to look for the lights that either took 2 globes instead of one or go for a "T5" globe fitting which is the circular fluro globe. We were told this is the brightest option. ( though i would suspect if you could find one that takes 2 globes this would do a good job) We've bought one of these for our bedroom but the non fluro for the rest of the house. unfortunately this mean hallogen globes which are not as eco friendly. I can't tell you how well they work yet as we haven't had them installed. Ours were from beacon. and yes do have wooden blades. In the choice tests they rated about half way up the scale they did. The brand is Lucci and the fan is called the Futura. it was the only one Dh and I could both agree on. it comes in all white, silver with wenge blades and all silver. the silver actually looks chrome unlike some of the other wooden blades we saw. Something one of the other people in a fan shop said, and choice also said was that wooden blades are slightly quieter and if by some horrible change you do put an arm up into a moving one will cause less damage. etc. I still wasn't sold on the idea having seen quite a few with wooden blades that I thought looked horrible and which had very fake looking silver coatings on the blades. Here are the ones we bought. It's globe cover is slightly deeper. (Eco version) With wenge blades below. ( yes it comes in that too) But seeing as her's is an outside one, I imagine it's metal. Re: Bright Fanlight - ideas please 11Jan 17, 2010 7:08 pm I've just been looking at efficiencies of various lights and then was browsing light sites. Martec has an all singing, all dancing ceiling fan with a 40 W circular T5 that they claim produces 1800 lumens which is equivalent to a 130 W traditional globe. Now, I'd normally consider around 75 W to be good in a bedroom and I'm a light junky. Best of all, this is a dimmable flourescent (!!!) so just perfect for setting the right light level for any occasion... http://www.onlinelighting.com.au/produc ... ts_id=7019 Pfiff Finally making progress again, with a clothesline (yippee) and some much needed little things being attended to over the holidays. 40 C on New Year's eve? We love our a/c! Re: Bright Fanlight - ideas please 12Jan 17, 2010 8:48 pm Fiffaro that brushed nickel one is lovely. i was quite keen to get that one. The one we ended up getting unfortunately only comes in white but the covering shade part is slightly less deep than the martec version. We've seen both and Dh didn't like the deeper martec version which is a shame as I liked the idea of the brushed nickel martec or the nickel/chrome with wenge blades (lucci) like we got for the main living area.) Sadly there was no way I could talk him into it either once he found out the other one was only $209 instead of the $300 plus for the martec version. Re: Bright Fanlight - ideas please 13Jan 18, 2010 10:14 am I found the Fanaway light to be quite bright - but we've only seen them in the shop. Give me 8 more weeks and I can tell you what they're like in real life After 4 years - we're in! Re: Bright Fanlight - ideas please 14Jan 18, 2010 11:00 am Southies The hunter pacific fans are stunning BUT............. the blades are plywood ???? Nearly $300 for plywood? You've gotta be kidding! It's $300 for ... die-cast aluminium body/canopy. 5 years warranty on the motor. 2 year in-situ warranty. Australian made and designed product. Great quality product, superior service. The plywood is engineered to do the job better than any other material - so not sure why you have an issue with that. If the price is a concern, Hunter Pacific Concept fans are now available as a "made in China" Hunter Pacific Australian-designed import called the Intercept. The same Hunter Pacific warranty applies and they come with a energy efficient flouro (PLT type) light kit option (26W flouro instead of the 100W halogens). The PLT fluoros produce 1800 lumens (which is a 130W equivalent) - but are not dimmable. We have 2 Concept-2's. The 100W halogens produce a better than average light. We have 2 Intercepts. The 26W compact PLT fluoros produce a better light than the halogens - brighter and more natural. Also, a word on the T5 flouros.. The light from a T5 flouro is fantastic. We have 2x T5's above the ensuite vanity and one in the WIR (40W) and they are a great natural bright light. Highly recommended if you can find suitable light fittings for them. Re: Bright Fanlight - ideas please 15Jan 19, 2010 6:45 pm Thanks everyone for the great info. I'm keeping a list of what to look at. Couple of questions? What is a wenge blade? I've never owned a wooden blade fan before, are there any disadvantages. As I need a white fan it would be good to avoid the rusting you can get on the metal blade edges, just wondering if the paint on the wooden blades deteriorates over time in any way? Thanks Re: Bright Fanlight - ideas please 16Jan 19, 2010 7:40 pm wenge is a colour. It's quite popular with some on H1 for a laminate or a formica colour and I know that you can get wenge coloured shelving/bookcases too. It's a dark black/brown colour. I did a search for the term Wenge here on H1 and found Hels has wenge as at cupboard colour, someone else has it as their benchtop, Taffy has wenge furniture, maylandsmannor has it too somewhere i think. i also saw someone mention it as a flooring colour too. I would say both styles you have pictured are steel. The lower chord of the first pic would be a massive lump if made using timber considering the size of the rafters.
