Downlights in family and kitchen will probably be 12V halogens (as I think the cfl downlights my builder offers aren't dimmable - details are "KLS21WGU1011W", "11W 240V GU10 compact fluorescent lamp"). Family room is kind of big - approx 5m x 4.3m, but it spills over into the kitchen. With the kitchen, tried to locate the downlights over main task areas - eg 3 over island bench, one in middle, and one either side of the cooktop - but will also add under cabinet lights later. Just worried it may look a bit odd because the lights aren't arranged in a grid pattern like the family room. We were also thinking of pendants over the island bench; but we figured they're more decorative than functional and would prefer stronger task lighting from the downlights (and do people reckon they feel a bit intrusive being right over the island? never had pendants in kitchens before). Plus the dining room will have a couple of nice pendants over the table. Will change lights in HT room to probably 9 downlights after handover, as there is access to roof space above for my sparky to get in. Also thinking of adding a few step lights on a seperate circuit for that real theatre feel, just depends if I can talk my partner into it Thinking of oysters/batten fix lights to the entry hallway, and some nice pendants to the sitting room. Though looking at prices for nice pendants, about $250-300 ea; it seems putting in 6-9 downlights in the sitting room would be equivalent cost (downlights are $102ea for builder to put in, and there's a room above the sitting room so I think if we were to install downlights we'd put them in with the builder) In comparison to ground floor, the first floor is pretty simple. Main thing is added a wall light above ensuite mirror. Thanks all! On the understairs and the pantry we add automatic light on senors as the cost was fairly cheap. Good luck at the appointment!
