Browse Forums Lighting + Lighting Design 1 Aug 24, 2009 4:04 pm I’m needing help with where to place our bedroom light fitting, which is a statement piece – a pendant light with a 30cm fancy round ball shade. The electrician thinksit should be in the middle of the room, and normally I’d agree with that except the bed is not in the centre and I think the light should be over the bed. The room is rectangular, with WIR and ensuite on one of the short walls, with a sliding door onto the deck on the other short wall. on the long wall, we have a sliding cavity door to enter at the end nearest the WIR, and the bed is centred on what is left of that wall. On the opposite long wall, ie at the foot of the bed, there is a large window. If you can please picture that in your head (I’ve tried to attach a drawing but keep losing the whole thing – this is about the fifth time I’ve typed all this!), would someone please give an opinion of where the light would look the best? Over the bed it could dangle a bit lower, but in the centre of the room it would be a head-bumper. What do you think? Re: Bedroom light placement 2Aug 24, 2009 4:14 pm Laine, IF you put the light over the bed, how dark will that make the rest of the room? Perhaps you could go for some bedside table lamps if necessary later on. I have always had the light in the middle of the room and never really needed bedside lamps. You could always add them later if you find it too dark? A pic would be good, I know you've tried. Maybe you should COPY the post that you have typed before uploading the photos then you can just PASTE the text instead of re tying it all again? Are you going through Photobucket or Imageshack to upload photos. I took me forever to get it right. Also check that the little box below where you are typing your post that says Disable BBCode is UNticked (that was my problem) www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: Bedroom light placement 3Aug 24, 2009 4:35 pm I can picture it..hmmmmmm and I can see your dilemma. I dunno, I still think it needs to go in the middle of the room, I think it will look very strange hanging off to one side. You've made it tricky for yourself Re: Bedroom light placement 4Aug 25, 2009 1:48 am Hi there Laine, I too think you have made it a little tricky, but not unworkable Firstly, if the bed is to be offset, then the light fitting must also be offset, as these must be in-line. Just make certain that the bed won'y be moving anytime soon. This will then definately leave you with a dark spot in the room. To avoid this, either place a mior to reflect the light, or simly place a floor lamp in the corner. See .... fixed!! I don't think it will look odd, if the set-out is done correctly. Try it a few ways, and you will see that it will work. Hope this has helped. Re: Bedroom light placement 5Aug 25, 2009 9:22 am Thanks for replies - the problem has now been taken out of my hands and the light sits nicely over where the bed will be. And the bed can only be there as there are no other walls available, and since we have bush at the back of our block, we'll want to take advantage of the view from the bed in the mornings. It does look a little strange being offset, and if I'd thought of it soon I'd have bought two lights to balance the look. Of course the furniture isn't in yet but I think it'll look fine. Thanks for the mirror suggestion too - there's a narrow section of wall between the WIR and the ensuite that could accommodate a long narrow mirror, and since we don't have one in the bedroom anywhere, that might be a great idea!
