Browse Forums Lighting + Lighting Design 1 Aug 02, 2009 7:40 pm I'm planning to put white LED striplights under the benchtop edge of our new gloss black kitchen to provide a glam effect without being dazzling However, I'm not sure which is the most suitable type - the edge will be apron mitred so the LEDs will be protected from spills so the waterproof type *may* not be a necessity. We're also planning to add a dome to the living room ceiling and want to get this underlit from the rim of the dome - but with a warm white light. The dome supplier has suggested Fibre Optics but I think flexible LEDs strip might provide a better solution. As can be seen there are many different types but they don't always state the lumens value of the strip - any suggestions? Edited by Onc_artisan Re: LED Strip Light Selection 2Aug 13, 2009 7:05 pm Hi Led strip lights are great things and are growing in poularity all the time. There are many types around and many consume about 26 watts for a 5 Mtr length. This is quite small usuage and very ecomomical to run. There is little or no difference in the price between waterproof and non waterproof , so my experience is to go for the waterroof variety then there are no circumstances that will wreck the strip . Cove lighting like your ceiling is fantastic and of course the kitchen is the place for this lighting ( have a look at all the better kitchen displays and all are getting on the band wagon as lighting is the latest trend.) I am not allowed by this forum to tell you where to purchase these as it contravenes the rules. I got kicked off for trying to help another forum member so I have to behave now or risk getting kicked off again. But I suppose you could send me a private mesage ? Hope you find the lights as these look absolultely fantastic. Re: LED Strip Light Selection 3Aug 25, 2009 1:38 am Hi there Pewit, LED strip lighting is great, but if you have a budget in mind, i would keep it to a minium, as it is extremely expensive. That being said, it does give a WOW statement!! Alternatively, you will find that in many cafes ,bars and clubs nowdays, they have underbench fluorescent lighting. This is a very cost effective alternative - http://shop.micaunited.com.au/cat/2054064.html Hope this has helped. Re: LED Strip Light Selection 4Aug 26, 2009 10:22 am Hi Pewitt, I guess that the LED strip is available from many places and is not terribly expensive ,I know that cool or warm white strips for 5 mtrs is about $250.00 plus GST . Have a look at this link http://www.hafele.com.au/isapi/online/r ... ctions.asp Rgds Greg Re: LED Strip Light Selection 5Aug 27, 2009 12:48 pm Thanks all - In the end we found the only way to choose between the various options was to go to a showroom and see them lit for comparison - www.ledlighting.com.au were very helpful. Re: LED Strip Light Selection 6Nov 10, 2009 9:00 pm Having decided what type of LED strip to use I'm now trying to select the appropriate driver. The LED strip under the kitchen counter won't need to be dimmable - but we're putting another in the rim of a ceiling dome and I'd like to be able to (a) change the colour and (b) dim the light output. I've found this Amber, White & Blue strip from Domus but I'm not sure about the controls required. I found a driver calculator here http://ledsupply.com/driver-selector.php But I can't seem to tie this to the specs of the strips we would like to use. We have a sparkie who will do the installation BTW. Re: LED Strip Light Selection 8Feb 22, 2010 10:19 am Hi Pewitt, LED Strip Lights are such a great way to illuminate and decorate your kitchen subtly so it looks classy and not too over the top. Because they have such a long lamp life the initial cost is completely outweighed, you will also be reducing your carbon footprint as they are extremely energy efficient. They are perfect for use where children and pets can easily get to them, like your kitchen, as they are low voltage and cool to touch. If using them in the kitchen then I would recommend buying the waterproof versions just in case any accidents occur. An LED specific driver will allow you to dim or change the colour variation of compatible LED Strip Lights. Dimming your LED Strip Lights can also increase the lamp life if used correctly. [LED Lighting Resource website that offers helpful informative pages on LED Strip Lights, LED Dimmers and LED Drivers. For high quality LED Strip Lights, ANL Lighting has a great range at affordable prices Hope this helped. eSaver Re: LED Strip Light Selection 9Mar 09, 2010 6:33 pm LED Strip is good choice, i think. Especially in installation, if you are going to do it yourself. By the way, if you think it's too bright, i suggest to add a dimmer in your circuit. Lighting our life!
