Re: lights 3Jun 10, 2009 9:23 pm is it difficult to install the downlight myself? the builder is charging 75 dollars per light. is that reasonable? Re: lights 5Jun 10, 2009 10:21 pm cococrunch is it difficult to install the downlight myself? I'd get an electrician do it unless your particularly handy in the electrical department. Each downlight usually has its own transformer and if you position them too close together, they can overheat and turn off and on as they heat up and cool down. They might also be a bit tricky to install yourself after handover if you're building a 2 storey house as there's obviously no ceiling access from the first floor. Re: lights 6Jun 10, 2009 11:19 pm I'm right up with this at the moment as we've just altered our lighting plan slightly today. If you're putting in battern holders but want to change them to downlights later on (like we are because we know a sparky and its cheaper for us), make sure they're installed atleast 300mm away from any timber beams. Its a new regulation, aparantly they get quite hot and are a fire hazard. Building Sahara 27 with Aaron J Re: lights 7Jun 12, 2009 12:17 pm Quote: is it difficult to install the downlight myself? This is what I've been thinking about recently, planning to build a double storey starting later this year. In my last home (1960s single story brick) I had a sparky mate come do some wiring and downlights for me. In one room (with access to the roof) he had his apprentice up in the roof to run wiring and stuff, but in another room (extension with flat roof) he was able to drill holes and pass all the wiring up without getting into the roof space. However because I think there was no roof insulation or beams, that was why it was possible. I'm thinking of upgrading downlights in the ground floor when we get around to building, but leaving any planned upstairs downlights for my sparky to do. Other thing that I've been thinking about is the home theatre wiring, it's in a room at the back of the ground floor (from the plan we're keen on) and I think it has a roof over it (rather than another room) so with any luck my sparky can get in there for downlights and also wiring up the projector. Not sure on if it's possible for him to run wiring to a 8.2 speaker system so I might have to get the builder to do that as well... at a hugely inflated price On a related note, does anyone know if you can nominate your own tradie to go on site for a day or two to run wires for you during the build process (eg with PD or m3tric0n?) Ask the builder before you sign - if they say "no" go to one who will - it is not an unusual ask. We are running conduits with strings throughout our house so we can upgrade not only after we build but also in years to come as technology improves. Builder has told us we will have approx 1 week as a window of opportunity to do it, and it will be our responsiblity to do it - they will not stop work in order for us to get it done. 2011 Home Sweet Home Handover 03 September 2010 PCI 27August 2010 Plumber 20August 2010 Electrician 19August 2010 Painting 04 August 2010 Cabinets 13Jul2010 Lockup 23June Frame 20April slab 1Mar10 So I'm just reading up on this ecosystem of lights.
