Browse Forums Lighting + Lighting Design 1 Jun 03, 2009 2:47 pm Hi people getting new houses built, we're O/bing & rather senior in years on this forum & r getting near light fitting stage, can anyone tell me what stlye of light fittings r the fashion these days in bedrooms? we see a lot of down lights being used, but r these suitable in bedrooms, we have previously had 1 main general room light then had bedside lights.....we will still have the bedside lights but wonder about main room light? any ideas or pics would be appreciated. cheers tony Re: Lighting for Bedrooms in new houses? 2Jun 03, 2009 3:00 pm The hubby and I were having this conversation. I wanted downlights, but he wasnt too keen. We havent decided yet what we're going to do but I was thinking if we had downlights then I would want them attached to a dimmer switch so we wouldnt need bedside lamps...We might even have downlights in the master room and oyster lights in the minor rooms.. We won't be using downlights anywhere. We will also have bedside lamps. I'm not a big fan of downlights though. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Lighting for Bedrooms in new houses? 4Jun 03, 2009 3:03 pm Oysters are probably the most popular option in bedrooms or maybe oysters with downlights - we are having oysters Re: Lighting for Bedrooms in new houses? 5Jun 03, 2009 3:13 pm We're having oyster lights in most of our rooms and might upgrade the main bedroom light to something a little more special in the future. We've limited ourselves to a handful of downlights over the kitchen bench and bathroom vanities. We currently live in a 4bd, single storey house that contains about 98 downlights. There are only two of us and even then the power bill is quite frightening! That's why we've opted for oysters and low voltage downlights in the new house!!!! Re: Lighting for Bedrooms in new houses? 6Jun 03, 2009 3:18 pm We'll most likely be having oysters in the bedrooms, reserving downlights for kitchen/living areas. I have downlights in the bedrooms in our current rental and hate them. They always blind me when I'm ****** in bed, even though I have a dimmer. Oyster and bedside lamps are still the go in my opinion. Re: Lighting for Bedrooms in new houses? 7Jun 03, 2009 3:26 pm I think whatever version of ceiling lights you have, you will still probably need bedside lamps - especially if you read in bed at night and your eyes are rather senior in years ; you want a light source close to you and also specific to your area - so you can read while partner sleeps, for example. Re: Lighting for Bedrooms in new houses? 8Jun 03, 2009 3:46 pm We're using ceiling fans with lights in the bedrooms. (You're not allowed to run your air-conditioner after 11pm here, so fans are a must.) Everyone has bedside lights too. We also have no downlights in the house. Judie Re: Lighting for Bedrooms in new houses? 9Jun 03, 2009 7:14 pm We are having d/lights in the living areas of the house and oysters in the bedrooms. Having said that, I have not seen an oyster light that I really really like yet. They seem so daggy, but maybe I am looking in the wrong shops. I will be searching for just the right one. I agree that bedside lamps are important, especially if you are a reader like me. I may get pendants instead, not sure. www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: Lighting for Bedrooms in new houses? 10Jun 03, 2009 7:16 pm I just went light shopping today and had this same dilemma. We're currently leaning towards doing most of the house with the Metro pendant range from Beacon. There is an oyster version for bedrooms and hanging versions for our entrance hall/dining. However, we're getting plain battens put in by the builder and I suspect we'll have those for at least a year before they're replaced by actual light fittings. Re: Lighting for Bedrooms in new houses? 18Jun 03, 2009 8:21 pm Our entire house is done with stainless steel satin colour downlights, with the exception of a few. Bedrooms have small lamps and downlights. Master - 5 downlights, all minors 2 each. Rest of house in downlights, with meals and lounge with the Habitat sphere pendant light from Beacon http://www.beaconshop.com.au/index.php? ... t&Itemid=1, kitchen island with Tola hanging light http://www.beaconshop.com.au/index.php? ... t&Itemid=1, and alfresco with fan.
