Browse Forums Lighting + Lighting Design 1 Apr 29, 2009 3:42 pm I've bought a three light pendant for over the breakfast bar, and it measures 11cm from ceiling to bottom of the light. When I measure this distance, it seems that the light will be very low. Could somebody measure theirs please? I feel that I need to reduce this length by about 30cm if this is even possible, as I think the lights might be in the way. Is their an optimal distance between benchtop and bottom of light? Thanks heaps! Re: Pendant lights over breakfast bar 2Apr 29, 2009 3:47 pm 11cm doesn't seem very big? Ours hang 80cm from the ceiling, but our ceilings are 3m so there is lots of room lol. I don't know where the measuring tape is but I would say I have a similar height between the pendants and the bench. If you go by the rule of thirds it will look nice ... one third benchtop, one third lights, one third space in between. That's roughly what ours is I would say. Re: Pendant lights over breakfast bar 3Apr 29, 2009 9:08 pm Did you mean 111cms??? This would be max length, should be easy enough to shorten?? The designer at Beacon Lighting suggested that the bottom of the pendants be about 5cms above the top of the head of the tallest person in the family...minimises shadows... whether this is true or not Re: Pendant lights over breakfast bar 4Apr 30, 2009 9:34 am Woops! I meant 110 cms from ceiling to the bottom of the light fitting, what a difference one zero makes! Thanks for replies - the rule of thirds sounds good, I'll measure that and see how it goes. Re: Pendant lights over breakfast bar 5May 25, 2009 5:04 pm Seeing as this question is about pendants over an island bench I figured I would hijack this thread. I have my sink on my island bench and I am going to have three pendant lights - Is it better to have glass shades as opposed to fabric ones for ease of cleaning? I'm worried that with fabric ones the steam from the sink or from appliances will make them go all gungy and it would be hard to clean 'A bottle of wine contains more philosophy than all the books in the world.' IMO they would get very grubby over time. Glass shades would disperse the light further too Living in Caloundra Thread****** Lovin my house all finished!!!
