thanks. Re: Electricians to install downlights 4Mar 10, 2009 6:32 am Im an electrician give you a few pointers first by all the materials yourself we make 100% mark up on materials (more on cable depending on price) you may think this is excessive but its alot of running around to get the materials for us. You can buy all the stuff from Middys you need and the staff will help you some what. Put in the new energy efficial fleuro downlights which are the go these days. Their 240v run at much lower tempreture and alot lower Wattage (meaning their cheaper to run and won't burn your house down) Their around 30bucks each vs say 10 Bucks each But trust me if you put the old ones in. 3 years time youll be pulling them out and replacing them with these new ones. If I was doing the job and got say 50 bucks each to install them id be pretty happy. Without matterials. Think of it this way me and apprentice could easily do 20 downlights in a day that 1000 bucks for the day. I would say 40's not to bad. Offer them CASH!!!! on completion trust me saves heaps. Chasing invoices is the worst thing in the world. Never use a big company. The guy that comes out doesn't care because its not his business their overheads are too high. You local electrican will want your repeat business so they will do a good job and will negioate on price. (I used to work for a small to large domestic electrical company sometimes I was embarrised to hand people the invoice).
If you need any advise on what materials to buy cable etc just post here and ill help you out. Brendan Re: Electricians to install downlights 5Mar 10, 2009 7:47 am Any idea how much a ceiling fan with light, would cost to connect. Im installing the fan but for insurance purposes cant do the electric hookup.
I need 5 hooked up and im quite capable of pulling the extra wire through in preperation for the sparky. Coming from someone who has dealt with insurance regarding a house fire (and nothing to do with the wiring either), I have and will continue to be dotting my i's and crossing my t's when it comes to using registered trades. Pay the bit extra for a piece of mind and having the work done and signed off. Something that may seem insignificant now can in fact cost you your insurance pay out later. My 2c worth.
