Browse Forums Lighting + Lighting Design Re: Junction Boxes for future outdoor lighting 21Mar 05, 2009 11:00 pm Wonderland, Firstly a j box is simply a way to house the end or join of a cable. The j box you have on your alfresco will more than likely have only one cable running to it and one switch. This will run more than one light but you will have only 2 options, all on or all off.
If you want to control individual lights (or groups of lights) separately you will need to run an extra cable for each set and have that cable connected to an extra switch for each group of lights you wish to control independently. As chuth said, how many lights you can run on a particular circuit depends on the current draw of the light, what size cable and breaker has been installed and how long the cable run is. It will also depend on whether that circuit is a dedicated circuit ( nothing else connected to it) or if it just an extension of another lighting circuit connected to other fittings. Generally lighting circuits are run in 1.5mm cable and have 10 amp breakers but some sparkies beef this up a bit especially if they know its for outdoor lighting. When I did my electrical plan, they have options for "Junction box for future external light" and "Weatherproof junction box for garden lights". Not sure what the difference, may be it can draw more lights?? I guess I will double check with the electrician when he does the work. I hope they are the same! Re: Junction Boxes for future outdoor lighting 24Mar 07, 2009 2:43 pm The regular J Box can only go inside and the weather proof ones are at least IP56 rated. This means that you can have them in area's that might get wet.
There is a rubber gasket that seals the box where you access the cable join. Just remember that they are all only plastic and don't cost much.
