Browse Forums Lighting + Lighting Design 1 Jan 06, 2009 8:30 am I am having a new kitchen installed soon in 25 year old home but thought I should use the tradesmen to get a few extra bits done while they are here. I would like to add in a couple of ceiling fans into bedrooms and am wondering if I use fans with lights, can they just go in exactly where the existing ceiling lights are without new wiring needed? Also if I get remote control fans does that mean less wiring too? Is there no control box on the wall, just the remote? But wait there's more ...... if I use remote control fan in lounge room go it go in the middle of the two existing pendant type lights by running from the existing wiring?
Sorry if it's a bit complicated but I would hate to have a tradesman here and not get him to do the extra bits! Any opinions on ceiling fans, remotes, brands etc would be helpful too. Re: Ceiling Fans lights in renovation 2Jan 06, 2009 8:35 am I can't help with all your questions but you can replace an ordinary light with a ceiling fan light. We did this in our main bedroom and lounge in our old house. The standard light switch was then replaced wit the fan light/switch. Re: Ceiling Fans lights in renovation 3Jan 06, 2009 8:03 pm hey i can help lol, i am an electrician......
it depends on wat kinda u get.... if u have a light, and replace it with a fan (without light) no extra wiring is needed..... agen depending on which kind of fan (with light) u get, there will have 2 be a little bit extra wiring,,,,, with the two lights in ur lounge, if u want the fan on seperate from the lights so you dont have to have the fan and lights on there will have to be a little extra wiring.... so my advice is with little as possible wiring and work mayb get the remote controlled fans, they may be a little more expensive but ul probably save money on the labour costs overall it wont be much wirng, just a little bit from the fan/light down to the switch... hope that helps any questions feel free 2 ask Re: Ceiling Fans lights in renovation 4Jan 06, 2009 8:50 pm Thanks for the advice - I'll get the one with a light for the bedroom (and just replace old light fitting) AND I'll get one with remote control for the lounge room. Thanks so much, this is just the greatest site for getting ideas and info! Re: Ceiling Fans lights in renovation 6Jan 06, 2009 8:57 pm gersy1964, I got one of my fans with remote control but still have a wall switch for it.
Also, I am not sure but I *think* that remote may work for whichever fan I am in the vicinity of... Re: Ceiling Fans lights in renovation 7Jan 06, 2009 9:01 pm Yep, remote seems to be the way to go. The electrician will get a surprise when he arrives to do my kitchen bits and finds me waiting with a list of extra tasks. Hope he is persuaded by my offer of cash!
