If we want to install a light pendant above the island bench in our kitchen shown like below: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ do we need to ask our builder to add a normal light batten holder? Do they have a specific name for this kind of light fitting? Metricon Amira Re: light pendant 2Jan 01, 2009 9:00 pm Yes, you need to ask your builder to instal a batten for a future light fitting. They'll stick a globe in it and add a Chinaman's hat.... but you can then get an electrician to instal the fitting you want after handover.
We had three battens added above our bench, and we managed to find DIY single pendants that we liked, so no electrician required. They cost around $60 each from Bunnings. This is the one we got: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ There are quite a few others available - some can be found here: http://www.onlinelighting.com.au/index.php?cPath=60_159&sort=2a&page=2 Re: light pendant 3Jan 01, 2009 9:42 pm kek Yes, you need to ask your builder to instal a batten for a future light fitting. Is the batten holder you mention like the one in the pic below: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Metricon Amira Re: light pendant 4Jan 01, 2009 9:53 pm I'd assume that you'd only need one batten for that particular light fitting. It might be wise to check with the store you're buying it from, but I can't imagine that it would need more.
And yes, that's exactly the kind of batten holder you need. The electrician will remove it anyway, all he needs is the flex, but the builder can't leave live elextrical flex dangling from the ceiling, so they have to provide a basic light fitting. I love your pendant - would have considered one like that myself, but we'd already done our electrical plan with the three battens by the time I saw some similar to yours. Re: light pendant 5Jan 02, 2009 7:21 am you only need one batten. the fitting you pictured will have one spot for wiring...it would be good to check first if it's in the middle or at one of the ends.
if the installed batten isn't in the exact position where the wiring in the new fitting is then the electrician will have to extend the wiring to meet it...which will just cost you more. Re: light pendant 8Jan 03, 2009 10:36 pm Wanna Hi kikin, can I ask where you found the light fitting you posted a picture of. My hubby actually likes that one unlike any I've shown him before! Thanks Jo Hi Jo, I found that light fitting in DFO Essendon. There are some factory outlets for lighting. Metricon Amira Re: light pendant 10Jan 04, 2009 8:03 pm Hi Kikin,
maybe u can ask the builder to provide a junction box at the ceiling above the bench, then later u could ask the electrician to install the light fitting. That gives u more flexibility to the light fitting. Alternatively, u may ask the builder to include a batten holder for the same spot in the ceiling ( but maybe need to specify if it is centred or not, depending on the design of the pendant) Then after hand over, u may still use standard batten with DIY light fitting or ask the electrician to turn it useable for other light fitting ( like urs in the pic) nottie Spring is here! Hurray! Hi - thanks for your reply. Yes I think 'Ill go for whitish with very speckly bits rather than pure white something like this.
