Browse Forums Lighting + Lighting Design 1 Dec 04, 2008 12:17 pm Our electrials have just about finished being installed, but the guys installing have mentioned that they didn't wire our kitchen lighting as specified.
What we wanted (as per plan below) was a single light over sink on a single switch . Then 2 lights in the middle of the kitchen off another switch. And finally 3 lights centered over the kitchen bench off another switch. So 3 switches in total. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ But what they've done is connected the single over sink light and 2 middle lights together. They have said this can't be changed So instead of 3 switches for the kitchen we only have 2. (apparently the wiring can't be changed now) But we designed it this way as I want to only have one light on if I want... I don't want to have 3 on at once if not needed... BUT CAN IT BE CHANGED NOW??? Also they haven't centered the 3 lights over the bench... should we get these centred??? I'm not sure how far to push these issues. DH thinks that a solution for the 3 kitchen ones (the single and 2 lights) is to put them on a dimmer... would that work Here is a picture of the 'battens installed' which will be changed to downlights after handover. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ The 2 battens closest to the top of the photo actually are from the 'family room' The lights in question are the others. Thanks for any help or advice. Re: HELP: Lighting wired incorrectly in my Kitchen -Update fixed 2Dec 04, 2008 12:46 pm They can be changed - my partner is an apprentice electrician who works on fancy million dollar houses, and they CONSTANTLY change their minds where their downlights go. They just patch up the ceiling, paint over it and make a new hole. Very fixable. Re: HELP: Lighting wired incorrectly in my Kitchen -Update fixed 4Dec 04, 2008 8:46 pm Clarity - your kitchen is GORGEOUS!!! Am going to have a look at your blog in a minute to see if you've listed all your colours.
Did the sparkies say why they had not done it to plan? Was it just something they overlooked, and they're saying it can't be fixed now, you'll have to live with it like that, sorry? ANyway I agree that it CAN be changed. My builder's sparky changed a switch for me the other day when I realised the switch for the rumpus room would always be behind the double doors. He was fine with it. As for how much you should put your foot down, that is up to you. I have a similar set-up with the kitchen lights, only my 3 lights are all on the same switch; I didn't bother getting a separate one for the sink. So it wouldn't bother ME, but I can see why a lot of ppl do get a separate one over the sink. The lights over the kitchen bench are a higher priority IMO. If they are too far back, you will be working over your own shadow. So they should get fixed I think! Are you having downlights or pendants here? I don't think the dimmer switch would make a huge difference You always want good light when you are working over the sink. Dimming the lights throughout the room won't help here IMO. Just my two cents.... Re: HELP: Lighting wired incorrectly in my Kitchen -Update fixed 6Dec 05, 2008 12:15 pm Thanks everyone for you comments... it is great!
DH has talked directly to the electrical company and explained what we need fixed...they'll look into it... Thanks again. Re: HELP: Lighting wired incorrectly in my Kitchen -Update fixed 7Dec 05, 2008 5:25 pm My granny could fix it ....

Ed Thanks Ed I wish I was your granny, perhaps I'd understand this stuff We have a junction box in the pantry for future light/sensor. So even if they've wired the 3 lights in question on the same wire, it can still be changed to have 1 light off one switch and 2 lights off another switch and then having the 3 lights over bench on a 3rd switch.. sorry if I'm confusing... I don't really understand this stuff Re: HELP: Lighting wired incorrectly in my Kitchen -Update fixed 9Dec 06, 2008 8:03 am it should be easy peasy. they are being lazy. It means a bit of extra cable. they will need to run a switch wire down the wall, and depending how they have wired the lights. might have to run a bit of cable to link the other two lights together.
the reason they say they say they can't do it, is if they ran the cables before the plastering, they may have just channelled the wall and stuck the cables in and plastered over. So if you need to run a new cable down the wall, it involves a bit of work. But it is their stuff up, so they have to fix it. as mrs smith says moving the three over the bench is easy as well, depending on how far they have to move it and if they have left any slack on the cable, but again, their problem Re: HELP: Lighting wired incorrectly in my Kitchen -Update fixed 11Dec 07, 2008 7:57 am The ones over the bench definitely need to be moved, the separate switch for the sink light will be interesting, by the way I'd have put the switch on the side wall near the sink, save the legs when needing that light, however, looking at the plan I'm guessing that is the lower floor of a two storey, so I'd suggest getting EcoClassic's Granny on the job of fixing it, since it won't be easy and probably there will be some tears IMHO Re: HELP: Lighting wired incorrectly in my Kitchen -Update fixed 12Dec 10, 2008 6:56 am Well I'm pleased to say that all is well and all the issues we had with the electricals, that being some small mistakes - have been fixed to SPEC!!!
We are very happy with the result, and there wasn't any need for standing our ground either. Now just a few patch ups to be done in the kitchen, but can live with that.
