Had a go at putting together a lighting plan for my new house...I'd love some thoughts and suggestions! A few things to mention...: - there are a lot of downlights, I know...but hopefully with them on separate switches and dimmers, we'll be able to keep the electricity bills down...*considering* installing C-Bus lighting control or similar... - the ceilings in the kitchen/family and also the dining are raked...2700mm at the lowest point...rising at a 15deg angle... - terrace on the northwest is covered by the same roofline as the family - really like the idea of having utilising 'feature lighting' as well as functional lighting - haven't yet done a full electrical plan...but with powerpoints, basically planning on putting them everywhere Anyway...i'd really appreciate any thoughts! Thanks Adam http://s455.photobucket.com/albums/qq27 ... gdraft.jpg Re: Lighting plan...attempt number 2! With powerpoints! 2Oct 07, 2008 11:01 pm By the way...if anyone can tell me how to get the image to show up, rather than the link...that'd be great!!! thanks!! Re: Lighting plan...attempt number 2! With powerpoints! 5Oct 08, 2008 8:24 am Straight off the bat I have to say very nice! Does the ceiling in the family really need 6 x tiples? Not that I really know what you mean by triple but assuming thats 18 globes in one small area
But I have to mention that wall lighting in the theater is probably the best idea I've seen coming from snooping through other peoples electrical plans. Too late for me but I'm going to be farming that idea off to everyone I know with a planned HT room! Well done! Re: Lighting plan...attempt number 2! Not that I really know what you mean by triple but assuming thats 18 globes in one small area Hey Mikky, thanks for the reply! And yeh, to be honest...I was only thinking of putting double fittings in the family...but after speaking to a 'lighting consultant', they suggested that it would look funny on a raked ceiling...unless we over-emphasised the look by making it three...i thought that maybe we could then keep them slightly dimmed pretty much permanently, so we don't burn anyone's eyes out! Re: Lighting plan...attempt number 2! With powerpoints! 7Oct 08, 2008 8:33 am What sort of pendant are you going to have hanging in the kitchen?
Often pendants in kitchens look good together in a group of 3 rather than singles. You also have a lot of lights in the hallway between bed3 and the study - but then virtually none in the hallway between the staircase and the living room. In the bed3/study hall I'd have only 2 lights and spread them out a little more - opposite the doorways to bed 2 and bed 3 After 4 years - we're in! Re: Lighting plan...attempt number 2! We're planning on having one big, oversized drum/bucket pendant over the b'fast bar on the island...hopefully it'll work out ok! I think you're right about the number of lights in the bedroom hallway...i'll have to have another play with that part! I should've explained the reason there are no lights in the hallway between the living and the stairs...the wall between the living and the 'walkway' is actually only a half-height wall and because it's split level, will only be about a meter high or less on the high side...and the staircase will be completely open/exposed...so what we were hoping to do is have 'feature light' directly above the low wall (which will be stone) to highlight it...and feature lights across the treads of the stairs...which we thought, together, should provide enough light for that open walkway!! That's the idea, anyway!! Re: Lighting plan...attempt number 2! With powerpoints! 9Oct 08, 2008 9:02 am BuildingACT Hi! And yep, nice big bucket is definitely what we're after...hopefully we can find something nice that isn't too common...but also doesnt look too strange! Re: Lighting plan...attempt number 2! With powerpoints! 11Oct 08, 2008 9:15 pm Hi...just wondering if there's a way that I can move this thread into the "creative lighting" forum...? Re: Lighting plan...attempt number 2! And yep, nice big bucket is definitely what we're after...hopefully we can find something nice that isn't too common...but also doesnt look too strange! This just reminded me of something I saw while out in the city the other week.... well I 'think' I saw it, it was a big night out . Anyway, on the bar at a club in the city there was the funkiest lamp I've seen in years, it was a mesh wire bucket, (like this) and it was literally filled with old light globes, and in the middle was one globe that was lit. It gave off enough light to be useful but looked so funky. Now that's a light bucket! anyway had to share Updated lighting plan...now with powerpoints :) 13Oct 20, 2008 12:36 am Ok...i've tried to add powerpoint locations (just marked spots at the moment - in green - haven't decided about which will be singles and which will be multiples etc....)
It's looking pretty messy...and I'm still working on 'rationalising' a few lights (there are a thousand at the moment! haha ) Any more comments or suggestions would be fantastic! Thanks!! Re: Lighting plan...attempt number 2! With powerpoints! 15Oct 20, 2008 8:15 am cyclone Where do you intend to install the c-bus switchboard ? Is that where all the wiring has to go back to? We haven't made our minds up about c-bus yet (about to go get a quote)...but at a guess...either in the garage or in the store room under the staircase...? Does it make a big difference? I hadnt really thought about it to be honest! Re: Lighting plan...attempt number 2! With powerpoints! 16Oct 20, 2008 8:27 am Hi BuildingACT,
I personally think you can never have too many powerpoints. But even I have to say, that is a LOT of powerpoints! I am having 2 in each bedroom (except 3 in master), 2 in garage, 2 in bathrooms, just to give you an idea. (That's 2 doubles.) Lots in kitchen is good Good luck with the rationalisation! I just took another look and I think you might be right - it looks like anywhere i've seen a wall i've put a powerpoint! haha I think a p'point rationalisation is going to have to accompany the light one Re: Lighting plan...attempt number 2! With powerpoints! 19Oct 20, 2008 9:25 am Re the powerpoints.... I also love powerpoints but even I was .
I am putting quads wherever there will be a TV and doubles everywhere else. But I am putting three doubles in each bedroom.... in the event there will be a queen size bed. One for each dressing table and one other. The pp on the island bench I'm asssuming is for a dishwasher, I'd put another one on the end of the island for appliances (blender etc). Put an extra one in the laundry, for iron, dustbuster, etc. I wouldn't bother with singles (except for dishwasher, microwave, etc) the cost up to doubles is minimal so doubles are the way to go. Another exception for a single.... if you get flies and insects where you are, put a single up high somewhere in the alfresco for a bug zapper. Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Lighting plan...attempt number 2! With powerpoints! 20Oct 20, 2008 7:49 pm Thanks very much for the comments guys!! I'm slowly getting there with my powerpoint rationalisation! haha although, every time i go to reduce the number of lights, I somehow seem to end up with more!!
Joles - apart from the microwave, d'washer etc I'm not planning on putting any singles anywhere I don't think...although, here in Canberra, bug can definitely be a problem, so I'll have to remember the bug zapper!! I think three in each bedroom (like you said, for sidetables plus one other) is plenty...and i'm sure I can cut down on a few in other areas...I guess I just still have in mind the comments you always hear saying "work out how many powerpoints you need...then double it!!" And since we're owner building and really making it up as we go, it's tough!! Anyway, thanks again for all the comments...
