I have heard that they are a very energy inefficient means of lighting a room. Can anyone suggest a better method that would be economically viable to change to? What kind of downlights are they? These days a lot of fluoro (ugh!) downlights are used to comply with energy-conserving regulations. Some people use LED downlights as an alternative, which use a lot less energy, but are much less bright. If yours are halogen downlights, you can lower your costs by using floor or table lamps in living rooms and bedrooms with energy-saving globes. If you have an island bench or breakfast bar in your kitchen, you might consider installing a pendant (or several) for task lighting there, and using energy-saving globes in them.
